Very little legroom so where to put the headlight dimmer switch?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Max Gearhead, Jan 19, 2012.

  1. With barely enough room for three pedals and two feet in a 34 Ford pickup where's the best spot for the dimmer switch? Firewall, dash, side panel? Anyone solved this problem? Thanks.

I used the HL switch from American Autowire that has 4 positions. Off, Park, Low, High

  3. I like them in the kick panel, learned that one from my old boss. You just hit it withthe side of your foot.

Recently there was a very good thread on dimmer switch location with a lot of good ideas/solutions. Do a search and you should easily find it.

  5. I use two toggle switches when I don't have a lot of room. One turns on the lows and the other turns on the highs. I guess that is a little backyard but it works for me.

Exactly what I did to mine. The majority of the switch is hidden behind the panel.

There is a universal switch made like this by Cole-Hersee (electric part manufacturer). See if you have a local C-H dealer. Or Speedway sells it too. I'm gonna use one in my narrowed T.

T Bucket pilots install them in the front of the seat riser, most of the wiring and components are in there also...dimmer switch button is easy to push below your thigh, but you've gotta use your hand.

Or u can run a toggle switch with double throw with an on off on. So u run ur lights front the headlight swith normally and leave the toggle always down for lows, then switch it up for highs. That way u only rub one switch instead of two.. thats how I set up my motorcycles.

I just use a three position push pull switch. In all the way is off, one click out is low beams, two clicks out is high beams. I run two relays, one for low and one for high beam. Foolproof and if you want you can incorporate a dash high beam indicator by just running a second wire to that light off of the high beam side.

  14. I put a regular pushbutton dimmer switch behind a non-functioning dash lighter, nobody ever knew and it was very convenient.

  15. Directly under the dash, set back about an inch. My 26 and 28 were that way. You can't hardly see it, and you just reach straight ahead, arms length under the dash and hit the button. Standard GM foot operated switch, not much pressure as you might think, hit it with your thumb. Position it right and you dont even have to look or search for it. 3 less wires you have to run down to the floor too. TR

I did just that in my current coupe -- a single pole, double throw, center off toggle switch. up = hi, down = low, center = off.

In my '33 truck, I use a toggle switch mounted on the dash with a double throw (on-off-on). Works great.

    32 Ford:
I put it below the clutch. It is not in the way and works well. I really like a floor mounted dimmer switch

I ran H-4's in one 27 and just used one beam....ON....they were very bright and the adjustment was critical or you got high beamed a lot. No inspection here

I put it under the dash on the steering column support, right next to the horn button.

On my '32 pickup I mounted a normal floor mount dimmer switch on the cowl brace that runs from the front of the door jamb to the firewall and just click it by hand.

......I use the same thing for years....work fine.....then a friend suggested a single toggle switch with a double post.....dim to the left and brights to the right. Both ideas would work fine....

That would be an On-ON switch. It will have 3 terminals. The center terminal is power from the headlight switch when on. The outer terminals will be used for the headlights. All floor switches work in this manner.
