HI! In the next county north of where I live they have vehicle emissions testing (VET). One of the tests they perform is to test your gas cap to make sure no gas fumes are escaping from your gas tank to the atmosphere. If their are fumes escaping your vehicle fails. God forbid that a common man lets gas fumes escape his tank! And they will bust you for it! So is it that no one has noticed yet that every gas station in America has vent tubes that vent their in ground tanks. massive amounts of gas vapors are escaping to the atmosphere thru these vents 24/7. It seems to me it says a lot about the VET's credibility. They sure don't seem to care about the vapors escaping oil company tanks. If anyone wants to see these vapors spewing fourth from any gas station just position the top of the vents between you and a rising or setting sun you'll see it. I'm not one of the unlucky VET victims we don't have VET testing here (YET). I just think someone needs to confront these oil companies and ask what their doing or plan to do to reduce these emissions. Thank you! 55 olds 98

NOT EVERY gas station in the US...been to California? They have hoses that you must FORCE into the tank filler to catch those nasty emissions...

Guess the rest of the country doesn't consider those emissions quite as bad as Cali does...at least not yet...Don't tell the EPA!!!

Is the company that's doing the testing based out of New Jersey? They're the biggest rip-off company in the US...they "work" here in ColoROD0...and we pay for it...our state gets NOTHING from them for being here!

  3. The Gov doesn't care about credibility, just money. The oil company has more money to pay so they get better concessions. You on the otherhand can do your part by paying fines, and fees for testing. [IMG]

I'm not sure about your state/county but most states make older cars (differing cutoff dates) exempt.

Here's the joke, your tank has to be vented, or your pump can't pull gas from it. No one ever checks the little charcoal canister that newer cars vent through. Or at least it isn't the norm, some exceptioms might be the Portland Or area and perhaps the Los Angeles basin.

Anyway, even when they are new the little canister doesn't really do much.

Here in MO they have "Saftey Inspection", they check for a Catalic Converter while they are at it. What does the Cat have to do with saftey? Who knows?

It gets better, a legit saftey takes 4 hrs, according to the state, the shop can collect about 7.50 for it. They have to buy the sticker from the state. At $60+ dollars an hr shop time how many legit inspections do you suppose happen?

I try to drive exempt. [IMG]

A friend of mine who has a tire business was hit by the EPA for letting his lead wheel weights laying on the ground for the day. EPA man said when its wet it will leach to the water tables. My friend asked if he considered all the tires in the US that are running on wet roads with lead weights on them. Again... Their concern is not the environment, only the money.

The Oil Co.s deflect their environmental responsibilities on the consumers any way they can, while taking advantage of every loophole the Gov't allows, and then some.

Does anybody rememeber Dubya's Presidential campaign? Kinda fuzzy except for the FL debacle, I know. He didn't take any matching funds for it, he had enough money without it. If he didn't take the matching funds, he doesn't have to tell us who contributed to his campaign.

Oil Co.s don't spend millions of dollars on a campaign to elect a president because he's a nice guy, or went to the same college as they did, or they belong to the same political party. They do it because they have people crunching numbers. They figured out that buying a little influence is cheaper than upgrading plants and paying R&D to come up with a better way.

The people we elect to confront them, have a nice tan from a 2 week golf junket in the Bahamas, and a guarantee of re-election funds paid for buy some group that's 4 times removed from the Oil Co.

    There's your plan...

Just a bigger stakes version of the "invite the neighbor you don't like over for a beer", trick when you plan on having a big, loud party.

Does any know what their representative did last week? Or on his vacation? Where the money to re-elect him/her came from? I don't, but maybe I'll find out now.

I vent my gassy vapors into the atmosphere all the time.

Guess I had better keep an eye out for those EPA folks.

Our pack of tree hugging lefty politicians are getting into this now, they really have no idea..... we have one of the highest levels of aromatics in our gas of anywhere in the western world (I think a max of 48%, from memory most countries are like 12% ?) don't forgett hese are all the nasty cancer causing things they put in to get rid of lead..... now we import all these crap used jap cars, the law don't say anything about not messing with the Cat on em so the drainpipe exhaust types rip the cat off and we got this bad air quality ?? now they want to do emissions testing, they better give old cars a break !!!

hey guys, A buddy of mine is getting a hard time from that VET over a vapor leak on his truck. I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed the vapor that comes out of those station vents. 40 are those hoses you speak of a at the pump recovery setup? If so what I'm talking about is the under ground tank vents. they rise above the buildings or canopies. usually grouped together in 3 or more. I have no idea what company runs that VET. I don't have to deal with them so I'm clueless as to who they are.

  9. Yeah I encountered the spring loaded hose/guns at Cali pumps recently- they are hard to hold in and almost invariably spill a few drops when removed!what a crock!also they make ya pay then pump there causing more emmissions from us Missourians leaving the cap off while going in to pay and back out to pump and going back in to get the change!!!!recalling the Govenor is just the start of reforms in that place......improvements could be made I'm sure!
