Anyone ever use VHB tape instead of adhesive to attach door weatherstripping? Seems like it would be way less mess and easier. I'm trying to think of a reason it wouldn't work. It's not like a roll or two of VHB costs substantially more than adhesive either. I'm working on a '64 F100. Anyone who's installed door seals on these trucks knows how annoying it is to get the seals to stay where they're supposed to. Tape seems like it would solve that problem.
I can't see why not? The only thing that might stop you is the thickness/ surface stand off height of the product. I watched a few video's, has me sold on the stuff.
Newer cars use double sided tape for some wether stripping. Some European cars use it a lot. One manufacturer started using clear windshield pinch weld primer under double sided tape seals to help adhesion. I’ve used it to help bond VHB tape to moldings. Clean the truck and I would probably clean the weather strip with soap and water. We discovered that soap and water helps remove mold releases that interfere with adhesion. You can test small pieces to find what works.
I fell in love with 2-sided tape years ago... Missing posts on a trim script? No problem! Installing a bit of fabricated trim but don't want to/can't use 'conventional' fastening means? To the rescue again! This is one use I hadn't thought of, but is a hell of a good idea! Thanks! I do think I'd use something like alcohol to clean the weatherstripping to be sure all mold release 'stuff' is gone though... I'm not sure soap and water would do it.
^^^^^possible. Alcohol based cleaners is a great suggestion. I don’t like oil based cleaners with plastics or rubber products
I have had good luck by heating the area that you are adhering to with a heat gun. not much, but the sticky likes it.
I think it would work. I’ve used it to attach enclosure tracks on acrylic windshields in the marine industry. Places where we don’t want to drill into or through the acrylic. We experimented with different pre-cleaners, and found alcohol wipes to be the best. 3M makes VHB in both a “plastic” and a “foam” type - with the smoothness of a painted jamb I think the “plastic” would be better. There is a surprising amount of movement in even the 1/16 “foam” tape.
I did some testing and discovered that VHB tape doesn't stick all that well to the foam rubber weatherstripping. Low surface energy I guess. Good old adhesive it is then!
I used it to re-install the windows in my Bayliner and one of the front ones blew out because the heat caused the adhesive to loose it's grip. It actually lost it's grip and the window blew out in a big wind storm right in the yard. It works good for a lot of stuff though. I bought the 3M off Amazon for a pretty decent price. I've still got part of a roll and used some the other day to stick a door panel back together.
Disappointed to hear that, it held promise of a easy fix to a awkward job. I watched a video on using the adhesive...seems I was doing it wrong. Seems the reason why is the right way is a bit more work with a bit of planning involved. While I keep looking for better ways, in the back of my mind I know I want easy to.
