looking close at Icebox's Merc i noticed a few things different on it than mine. Is it customized at all. I thought all 49's had 3 piece rear windshields. I guess my 4 door is different than coupes huh?

 

No,the 49's all have 3 piece rear windows. He must have a 50 rear window.

 

Thanks for having me at the meet Bob . It was great to see you again and even better to see your Merc ! It is really looking good . You've done a lot to it since I last saw it. It was nice meeting everyone , even If I can't remember names . Now I need a Hudson .
It's my understanding , in the early to mid production on the 49 Mercury's , the three piece window was replaced with a one piece . Some 49's came with a one piece rear window , as I believe mine did . There was also two different hood "birds" or emblems used in 49 due to material shortages from the war . I have both versions , same part numbers . I hope to see your car next time scumfuxcarclub . Anything else look different between our 49's ?

Now. The story I heard was. Many Merc owners took their cars back to the dealers and had the one-piece windows put in because they didn't like the three-piece windows. A guy who worked for Mercury told me that at a antique car show. There was also a story in the Hemmings Motor News that said the same thing.

 

well Icebox, I found out yesterday from Bob that i may have a '50 hood and grill. My center piece on my grille doesn't say "eight" and I don't have the letters that say M E R C U R Y i guess i have the '50 long chrome with MERCURY in it, i'll post pictures later tonight, i had a friend photograph my car last weekend with some girls.

My car was supposedly one family owned . The guy I bought it from said he remembers it came with a one piece rear window . He was in his ninety's and also thought I visted him in Indiana when I hadn't. Another guy I meant with a bunch of NOS parts said he worked the assembly line building 49's . He told me 49's had a three piece rear window but went to a one piece mid production to save money as soon as technology in production allowed . It was to difficult to make the one piece rear window at the start of production. Who knows , I would have to give some weight to the story printed in Hemmings . It could have been a easy way to make your 49 look like a brand new 1950. I have heard first hand accounts of 63 split window vets having the post cut out for a 64 rear window. I have seen all kinds of strange things on 49 , 50 and 51 Merc's. Newspaper door panel linings ? Doesn't seem reasonable but all the paper was the correct year . Here is a picture of Richard Dean's Merc taken in 61 . It is also a 49 with a 50 hood trim . He says he bought the car new and it came that way from the factory. Maybe a late production and they used what they had ? Maybe a dealer repair from a transporting accident ? I still think its very possible my car came with a one piece rear window . I'd like to know .
