Hello, I've been trying to find out how to decode my 12 digit vin on my 1949 Mercury. Does anyone have any info on this subject. I'm curious to know because mine starts with 007. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Look here for some good info. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=423962 http://classiccardatabase.com/specs.php?series=4746&year=1949&model=27186 http://www.mercuryclub.com/forums/topic/1949-mercury-paint-trim-codes/
The patent plate on the 49 models starts with 9CM then the linear number of manufacture. A small block farther to the right (facing the plate) lists the plant where the unit was manufactured in abreviated form. Just below the VIN is the body color code and just below the mfg plant abreviation is the body interior trim code. The body plate only lists the style (whether 2dr 72, 4dr 74, convert 76, or wagon 79) and the body linear number which likely has a date code of manufacture as part of the number. You have to be specific about which block you are refering to as having numbers 007. The color codes are 2-digit only and 07 is Trojan Grey.
Thanks for the info...heres a pic of the data plate. I had my buddy send it to me. The car is across the country waiting to be picked up by the shipper...the car is from Canada. Now seeing the data plate...Im really confused...lol. It does not seem to conform to what I've read. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Your photo might be too much digital info to add to this site. It didn't show up on this end. Some Canadian stuff is different so it might not be like the USA versions.
It is different than the USA built Mercury data plates. The 0072 is just the model number for a 6 passenger coupe (tudor sedan). The trim & paint codes look to be the actual FoMoCo code but not like the usa codes that started in 1949. Ford of Canada had their own way of doing things.
