    For you chevy guys or gals. I was wondering if for example a 1964 Impala SS in the USA vin number to start would be 41447 which would be Impala SS V8. Is it the same for a Canadian built car?
    Thanks for your replyes.

    4 = 1964
    14 = Impala Super Sport V8
    47 = Sport Coupe

    Do not know if the Canadian built numbers are the same.

    Edit: Sorry, misread your post and stated what you already know . . .

    yes, the next digit should indicate the location of the factory that built the car.

    According to impalas.org in 1964 the year, series, and body information are the same but there is no plant code. Meaning after the five digits you listed the sequential number will immediately follow on a Canadian built car. So in 1964 if the serial is 12 digits it is USA built, and 11 digits Canadian built.

    .....and that fact can really freak out the US dmv people. My 80 chevelle wagon was Canadian made and had one less digit than USA vins....had a helluva time convincing the DMV guys my car was legit.
