All, I am knee deep in a project researching the 1950 Darlington 'Southern 500' winning Plymouth fastback. I know the car was wrecked at Charlotte in 1951 and presumably scrapped. There are, however, two cars claiming to be originals, one in California (its really a '49 in disguise judging by the marker lights & tail lights), and another at the Darlington Raceway museum in South Carolina (this car looks too clean to be the real-deal, but its possible). I have an excellent photo of the real car (an action shot at the 1950 Darlington race) which shows the license plate [yes, these really were stock cars back then] clearly ledgible. I am seeking more information about the [original] car, and would like to obtain a copy of the build sheet...only problem is I need a VIN. Is it possible to lookup a VIN by doing a license plate search? I believe the car was only registered for one year, 1950 in North Carolina. Any help is greatly appreciated! Gary
if i read that right , you want to find the VIN number of a car from a photo of a 1950 North Carolina license plate? i doubt if NC DMV would still have any records on file , but you could give them a try. then even if they somehow had that info , i'm not sure if they would give that out
That's correct. I have a license plate # and would like to get the name of the original owner and VIN. My understanding is that DMV records are accessible to individuals conducting research, provided the information is not published or used to solicit.
NC DMV would know better than us! Good luck, hopefully you can find something, but you have a tough job ahead of you
