I have a question that I'm sure someone can answer. I bought a 30 Ford in pieces, and among the parts the guy gave me a blank VIN plate. My question is; What do I have to put on the plate, and where do I have to install it? Kevin
Vin or ID number for those who want to 100% Correct was stamped on the driver side of engine just below the deck surface and on the frame below the driver side cowl area on top of the frame. THATS IT. No tags were issued. I have heard that on some of the early A's there was maybe a date that was stamped on the face of the firewall.
Unless it is some type of aftermarket state thing, the only VIN numbers on early Fords (I know about V8s, Model As might be different but I don't think so) is located on the frames and the Transmission case. There is nothing on the bodies.
Copied from a Ford Barn thread: "Ford stamped the left side of the engine with a engine number on the engine number pad. Then, when the engine was dropped into a chassis at the assembly line, that number was then put on the top of the left side frame member in the vicinity of the cowl...you must raise the body off of the frame to read it...sometimes it is there, sometimes it is not due to the 80 plus years of service if you have an original, assembled vehicle."
Through automotive history many states allowed the car to be titled by the engine number which was the same as the frame number from the factory, but soon was not always a match. We are now faced with the number not matching the frame or even the engine after a few exchanges through the many years. These days states may be rather emphatic in accepting only the frame number as the true number. This can make the title process more difficult and expensive. If everything matches the process in California seems fair compared to some of the even more tax hungry stated as in the east. I'd love to sell most of my cars for a figure that several states use as a cost basis for taxation. Good Luck: Fred A
There is a metal plate rivited to the firewall on v8's and I believe also on Model A's. It is only patent number plate, not serial numbers.
I had an early 28 Model A coupe with the year stamped on the cowl. Good luck finding your numbers on the frame. Sometimes you can find them. I am getting an engine block for my 30 and using that number for my title.
There are body number plates (tags) for Briggs and Murray built bodies. These are not "VIN's". The tags are re-popped and sold by various Ford suppliers. As stated above the serial number is stamped on the engine and left (driver's) side frame rail under the cowl. (post #4)
