VIN VERIFICATION>>> Can someone explain this. Is this a service that you contact for help .I have a title but no cowl tag on a 42 chev pu. or so the title says it is anyway. Vin# on title says its a 46 code. I saw this on a reply on a different post. Thanks

  2. Call your local DMV?

  3. it should be a serial number the plate should be pass side just in front of the door under the hood . also some states went of engine number . you ll probably have to contact your hi way patrol/troopers/sate inspector depending on how your state runs it . in California if you dont have frame number serial/vin plate you have to have a vin assigned by chp . hope that helps some oh and yes it s a service you contact unless otherwise told by your states motor vehicle office ..

  4. This could be as simple as you taking a white piece of paper and a pencil, and making a lead etching of the Serial/Vin number onto the paper. Hold the paper to the tag, and start rubbing the paper with the pencil across the numbers until they all show on the paper. The other extreme is that your state has an actual form you get at the DMV, or print from the state web-site and with this and someone from a police agency they verify the number. The agency can be local Police officer, Sheriff, or State Trooper. Some states even allow a Notary to perform the verification. Some states you can tow your vehicle down to the DMV and they will do it there for you. If the local Police performs the check, they will call the number in, and see if it is stolen or wanted for any reason so be preparred for the worse. Of course everyone, and every department, and every state, has a diffrent way. So check your DMV and be certain. If you dont have a cowl tag on a 46, you might want to have ALL the info for your state BEFORE you call a Police officer out to verify your number.

Heading to the dmv today, thanks

  6. Good luck Dean, welcome to the HAMB, FWIW, its a good day to smile and put on your happy face. That person behind the counter at DMV can make your day a living hell or make your day a walk in the park. A little word of advice, get a knucklehead at the DMV, smile, say thank you, leave, and go to the next nearest one even if it means the next county. Just some friendly advice.

Thanks for the advice. Went to the dmv, they gave me a few phone #'s for inspections, ect. Had a nice chat with a gal on the other end. Seems like it won't be to big a pain to get a new state vin. Just keeping track of parts, apply for inspection and sit back and wait. It will be a reconstruction title, so that kind of sucks for resale. I'll call them next week for a list of must haves for the truck. One thing for sure it must have seatbelts. Thanks again for the help.. dean

  8. Your very welcome Dean, we are here to help. The seat belts are actually a good idea regardless whether or not required by law. Keep us posted on your progress. TR
