I mentioned in an earlier post and link that I've had my vinegar in a plastic locker type container for a number of years. I just add to it occ***ionally. One of my friends did a hood with vinegar a few years ago. He built a frame on the ground using 2x4's and lined it with plastic, put the hood in and filled it with vinegar, then covered it all with plastic. Several days later, he pulled the hood out poured most of the vinegar back into jugs, to keep for later.

I have a question, what about machined surfaces, like say old spindles...will it bother the machine surface enough to harm anything? Or will it just attack the rust?

maybe a stupid question, but worth asking before I through a few sets of spindles in the bucket.

I thought I'd try the vinegar on some shock mounts... here is a helpful tip I picked up: don't use a container with a hole in it... it will make a large scale mess.

I don't know if I posted this before, but I used Coke-cola on a badly stuck Hemi and 15 minutes later all the rusted pistons were free!!

  7. What kind vinegar? White? White vinegar is 5% acetic acid. 95% water.

Or did you use a barrel of red wine vinegar? Or other?

You could buy acetic acid and experiment with different levels of dilution to find the optimum.

anyone ever use the electrolsys method I have it works great BUt i have never tried vinagear ..

the electrolsys method uses a battery charger and baking soda... museums use it to restore artifacts it only effects rust will not touch paint ( if ther is no rust underneath) careful this produces hydrogen gas.....Hence the bubbles..

I got 6 gals of white vinegar from Sam's Club and it cleaned the springs in two days. I plan on putting it back in the bottles until I need it again, but it will be black vinegar this time. I was thinking about putting the front spindles in but I don't know if it will do anything to the part that is not rusty.

i bought a few gallons today and i have a ****pot full of nuts and bolts ummm, derusting? right now. thanks for the tip.

  13. What happens after all the rust has been eaten away? Does it continue to attack good metal? I have tried the electrolysis method, and while it took a while, once the rust was gone it had no further effect on unrusted metal. So if you were unable to check on it for a couple of days there is no harm done. How does the vinegar compare?

  14. The vinegar will work until neutralized by enough basic material in solution. That might be a long time depending on volume of vinegar vs surface area of object. Most of the corrosion will just settle out as particulate. Then you would pour the liquid off and remove the sludge. You'll probably lose more from evaporation than anything else.

Using some PH strips to check the solution before and after will indicate how fast it degrades.

    Phil,

If the spindles are badly rusted, they might not be good anyway. I would stick them in some vinegar for a couple of days and then wash them. After they are soaked and cleaned, check the bearing races areas (for looseness), threads on the spindle nut and king pins/bushings for fit.

I don't think that the mild acidic action from the vinegar is going to remove much, if any metal.

I have done 4 or 5 pairs of spindles, they look just like the way they went in, except perfectly clean. the vinegar does not take off any metal, just rust.

Will it hurt carbs???....I have a couple 94's that need cleaning. What about the internals? Wont it eat the copper?

Hey PeteJoe.....did you have alluminum heads heads while you did the cleaning? How long did you run it? (or how hot did you get it) Did you run it through the radiator? Anything clog with all the scale and junk comeing out?

Sorry for all the questions....Im thinking about doing this and want to be sure that nothing bad is going to come out of this.

That's because most all of your dark colored sodas contain phosphoric acid which is often a key ingredient in many of your rust treatment products.

While we're on the acid trip I inserted the original copperstrip plug wires off my A directly into a couple lemons, Today the corrosion wiped right off. Vinegar rocks too, great thread. Too bad we didn't all live closer, we could co op a giant vat.

  26. you put the vinigar in when the motor was in the ride? in the cooling system? id be interested to know if you had alluminium heads on as well as it woudl **** to see those corrode away!

I've had vinegar DESTROY the aluminum on a Holley 94. It turned it into a grey mush. I did however leave it sit for a few weeks in the vinegar.

I suppose if it degums carbs then sloshing it around inside my gas tank would probably be a good idea, no? I'm headed to Hell-Mart for some supplies.

Vinegar also works to kill some weeds so I guess when you are done with it you can use it to clean the weeds out of the driveway
