Vintage Air question new style vacuum valve

    I have a new vintage air setup I am putting in my 71 Chevy pickup. The new style has a vacuum operated heater control valve instead of the cable that opens and closes water flow. does anyone have any experience with this style?

    There are no directions on how this hooks up and it does not make any sense to me on how the valve is actuated. Sure...one side goes to vacuum on the motor and the other to the valve but what activates it?


    I could call them on Monday....but I would like to wrap up this install on Sunday.

    On page 8 of the instructions there's a diagram that may or may not help you out.

    I've got the same setup on my 72 K10 and I just went out to look at it and really couldn't see squat. A line goes from the engine through the firewall and another line goes from the valve through the firewall. I tried looking under the dash to see how they hook up but I couldn't see where they went.

    I know you didn't ask, but I really don't care for this system. The valve is either open or closed, so you have no control over the temp. On my 72 C10 I used one of their systems that uses factory A/C controls and a cable operated heater control valve. It seems to work better..or at least I like it better.

    Also I had a vacuum valve fail on my K10 a couple of years ago. It took us forever to figure out why my system wouldn't cool once the truck warmed up. Now I have a ballcock valve in the heater hose as a failsafe for summer time operations.

    If you haven't been there already, check out www.67-72chevytrucks.com . You might find someone over there with more knowledge of how this system works or they may have a photo on file of how to hook it up.

  4. Can you exchange with them ?? Maybe you could add the cable operated on your own ?? The original truck had a vaccumn operated heater control. Figured they would be using an electric control. They have gone to that on most of their units. Give them a call.

    I figured it out....they are running full time vacuum off the motor to a solenoid under the dash then back out to the heater control valve in the engine compartment....the cable on the control panel to triggers the micro switch which then powers the small solenoid under the dash to open and close the vacuum to the heater valve....

    Its a plastic valve and its going in the trash....I will put a good old fashion ball valve under the hood....and it wont be plastic.
