I had a neighbor in long beach, he's from lebanon, every time he saw me he'd offer to buy what I was working on, he is always shipping cars over there, they still like the old heavy steel benz' but now more they enjoy the splendid style and reflecting on our profitable U.S. history, he also said his home was destroyed and needed to replace what was lost.
I say to any of you, keep it here, don't let any of this get away.

I know what you mean, but busting knuckles on a 93 Honda to keep it running just doesn't seem the same as building a Hot Rod!;)

Same effort but the end results is so much different.

i say they're just like a puppy. i just want to see them in a good home. here, there, doesnt matter as long as its not getting crushed, rotting away, under an inch of dust in some guy that has lost interest's garage. "spread the hot rod gospel" world wide.

I'm amazed at the quality of work, care, and authenticity that hot-rodders in Norway, Sweden, and even some kids in Japan put into their customs and hot rods. I guess they don't have PBR window stickers over there.

  12. Well said John.....That's simply the truth of the matter...........

  13. It kinda sucks that they will never been seen again in the states, but like someone said ...it's at least going to another car guy. I wish someone would buy my '66 Caddy Coupe Deville so I could start a '55 Checy Post project!! Hint Hint FIRE SALE BUY MY CADDY!!!! LOL

  14. A guy from Sweden sent me pictures of a '60 Chrysler he was working on. He had to about rebuild the bottom front end of the car from scratch - and was doing quality work on it. They aren't sissies about rust repair. That alone should be enough to not be afraid to sell out of the country.

About 10 years ago, I sold my '36 Three Window to a local guy who had been pestering me to buy it from me for a couple of years. He convinced me that he really wanted it, and it didn't suit my needs. (I will go on record here again as one of those who DOESN'T regret selling a '36 Three Window. The car was very constricted inside, and my ideal power train combination I wanted ever since high school; 3/4 race 276' merc with a '39 floor box and 4.11's, was not a happy choice). Anyway, I see this clown a year or two later, and he's bragging that he sold it to someone in OZ or NZ for over twice what he paid for it. I'm sure the guy downunder was a lot more honorable and stand-up than the guy I sold it to, so I don't have any problem with it going overseas.

Also, Since all the young kids over here seem to be fixated on Hondas with fart-cans, we (older rodders at least) should be happy that there is another segment of the population that wants our stuff.

  17. It seems other countries have more of an appreciation for the period hot rods than many in the US have. So they should be able to buy what they need. Better than it becoming a glam street rod or rat. JMO

This thread is over 7 years old but for what it is worth the number of old cars coming into New Zealand probably isn't any less than it was then.

I don't have a problem with the buyers, as I know they go to a loving home. I do have a problem with the people in the export business, however. More than one in northern Minnesota won't even talk to a local about selling something. "You can't afford a car from me" is the kind of attitude they have. They seem pretty friendly when they see your tin, though.
I guess what I am saying is that I like people who genuinely love old cars, and the export business has bred a batch of "money men" who are just in it for the buck, and not for the love of old iron.

I sold my Australian built 33 phaeton to a car guy in Sweden, it’s a worldwide passion, share the love. I’ve also been burnt on a 33 coupe I brought in from the states, more mud in it than the Mariana Trench. Take the good with the bad. We’re all car guys.

  22. The guy I sold my 56 Pontiac to sold it to somebody from Japan after it was painted Porsche red. Whenever I see coverage of a Japanese hotrod event I look for it in background shots but I've never seen it. 56poncho.jpg
