<tt>This week’s report on the Fredrickson roadster restoration:<o></o></tt><tt><o></o>

</tt> <tt>I spent 2+ days restoring ernie's original axle. The right spool was broken away completely (holds the kingpin). I made a heavy-walled slug for the inside of the axle that fish-mouthed up to the spool and stepped down to the inside diameter of the slug just inboard of the break (where there was ANOTHER repaired area & slug). So I guess I slugged a slug. <o></o></tt>
    <tt>Anyhow, I swiss-cheesed the area with rosette welds - and did a deep <o></o></tt>
<tt>circumferential weld - after Lance pre-heated the whole end of the axle. I'd drive the car on it, but racing is strongly discouraged. It's a neat original axle with four diamond-shaped external patches on it, which say "this SOB was HIT and lived to tell the tale". More history evident there than we can imagine. That's exactly what disappears when you over -restore or replace.<o></o></tt>
    <tt><o></o></tt>
    <tt>gk<o></o>

The engine block is also headed to the machine shop this week.

    Billy,

Thanks for sharing these great photos of your Dad and other drivers!

Love that shot of Bob in the TQ at Pinebrook.

Anyone know who is in the photo of the Brenn #20?

Here are a few from my files. Some may be re-posts. The old one shows the roadster parked next to the rear engine sidewinder.

Thanks to all for your interest & support. The project is moving ahead very well but much remains to be done.

Yes Tony, some great stuff there, but the few I looked at were miss titled. Salem, not Eldora, Langhorne not trenton etc. But hell after 50 years to be expected!

    True,

They aren`t all captioned correctly and a lot of them are pretty poor shots, but there are some gems as well.

I can`t ID many of the 1960s USAC sprints on there like car #61 etc. Before my time.

NEMA owner Gene Angelillo passed away yesterday. Wynns1, who posts here, has maintained his midgets for many years in his Connecticut shop.

    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
During my time at the Riverhead (NY) Raceway, when ever we'd run the midgets, hours before any of the other racrers - hours before the sign in gate would open Gene Angelillo would be the very first to arrive. He'd park in the front lot and come into the office and we'd chat about midget racing. Sometimes we'd go across the road to a restaurant there and have lunch.

One time when he came early, as he walked into my office he said .. "I guess we won't be running tonight!" .. I asked why .. he said .. "Your infield is FULL of water. (It had rained the night before.) It looks like a (shallow) pond from asphalt to asphalt." he said .. I told him .. "Not to worry, that the previous promoters *improvements* made the drain work very slow, but that it worked and that the very sandy soil there would help with any remaining puddles." We chatted for some time and when it was time to sign in he first walked over towards that grandstands, then can back to my ofiice and said .. "You were right, it looks dry as a bone now!!!"

As much as I looked forward to hosting the midgets .. I also really looked forward to his early arrivals and truly enjoyed spending that time with him.

    RIP Gene.

We're preparing to host a midget racer and his father from Argentina for a few weeks this summer and are trying to gather information on how midget racing "infected" Argentina. There is a brief mention in Chris Economaki's autobiography of an expedition going there in 1938 from NYC harbor. Jack Fox has 6 pages [including photos] on the 1955 expedition.

Do any HAMB participants know anything about this?

I'll post links to some Argentinian races. The cars are locally built and reflect what midgets become without access to custom speed equipment.

The cars have starters and clutches as standing starts are required. Only one wheel has a brake and drivers are disqualified if they touch the outside brake handle once the green flag drops unless they are avoiding an accident.

Leo Barbieri and his father Carlos will be visiting in late July. We'll have Leo driving one of our sportsman midgets at Sun Prairie and at Rockford. It is great to know the international brotherhood of midget racing has a South American branch.

EXCELLENT!!!! I knew nothing about Argentinian / South American midget racing before this and would even like and enjoy knowing even more.

PLEASE post as much as you can about these folks .. their cars .. more about the history of midget racing there .. hopefully pictures too.

Also please introduce them to this thread .. maybe when the get back home .. somebody there will be able to post here in English.

Let us know about how they enjoy competing in your "sportsman" midget too. (I'm not sure what a "sportsman" midget is?)

Try .. if you can .. to have them see a full (not sportsman) midget race or two while they are here too.

THANKS for posting about the Argentinian / South American midget racing. I for one, would enjoy knowing more.

Our "sportsman" club is set to begin its 19th season of racing on May 16th at Sun Prairie. We have the schedule & rules on our website www.iiliniracingseries.com. The "driver" tab has photos of some of our cars & Leo's Argentinian machine.

We race older midgets on DoT legal tires. Same tires on pavement & dirt. We have some Mickey Thompson I Block sportsman tires in our inventory that a 7 sears old. We average around $300 a year per car on tires for 10/14 races. American Racer even REDUCED the price of our tires by 14% this year.

I'll try to get Leo to provide a link to their web site. Their cars are built of junkyard parts with fiberglass bodies. Carlos is a maker of cars & bodies. Very stock motors are used. Overhead cam motors are 1600cc max with factory intakes. Pushrod motors are 1750cc max with unlimited carburation.

    Hey Chuck ..

    THANKS !!!

I slight typo in the URL of your sportsman club .. the correction is
    http://www.illiniracingseries.com/

BTW -- I LIKE the "sportsman" idea and the obvious cost savings / cost controls !!!!

In Argentina .. Do you know if their midget chassis & rears ends built from junk yard parts too?

I clipped the picture of the Argentinian cars from your clubs Web Site to post here. I hope you don't mind.

I'd love to browse their Web Site too.

    I look forward to more.

    THANKS AGAIN!!!

Leo has been corresponding with us for a little over a year. From what he says there was some dispute between the promoter & the Americans in 1955 and some of the American race cars didn't get clearance to leave the country when the season was over. Many years later the locals found the cars and started parting them out & copying various parts. Between that & what Jack Fox wrote in Mighty Midgets it sounds like a B movie script from the 1950s.
We'll get more info & post it here. Social gatherings will be held during their visit so HAMBers in Chicago, Rockford, & Sun Prairie can meet them. If time permits I'll try to get them down to Indy to see the museum. Carlos is restoring a Fronty Ford conversion for a customer & would like to see an American version.

Would anyone mind if RABs32 (who has been posting some GRRREAT pictures on both the sprint car & modified stock car threads) posted some of his / his fathers & his Uncles older winged midget pictures, plus T/Qs from Atlantic City (NJ) .. caged and uncaged and also Flemington (NJ) with the wings on here?

    THANKS.

The driver of the car shown flipping in one of the clips posted photos of the car being dis-assembled on his Face Book page.

Frame is a big tube Kurtis style. They have a full clutch & transmission with an enclosed driveline to a Model A style rear axle & open axle tube.

That thing took a terrible ride but the cage worked and being true racers they are repairing it for another weekend of racing.

Could this be the car that Leo Bargieri, the midget driver from Argentina, will strap into when he & his father Carlos visit with you?

No matter what car he drives when here, PLEASE let us know his feelings, reactions, etc..

Try this for the Face Book photos:
    http://www.facebook.com/find-friends/#!/profile.php?id=1540252982&ref=nf

The #11 Mongrel-VW has been a very bad dog the last two years so we will probably have Leo drive our Buzzard-Focus [was car #82 in the gallery on the website]. It is currently being freshened after 3 hard years of racing. It has a clutch & a starter which would be one less adjustment for our guest.

That VW has suffered 5 engine failures in two years [two different professionally built motors], which I'm told isn't unusual. We've blow holes in 2 different cylinder heads, broke a camshaft, spun a magneto drive, and ate a fuel pump. Not to mention the oil leaks. I love the look of the thing & hope we finally have it debugged.

Here's the ride that Chuck will probably have his guest strap into.

Chuck has become an INTERNATIONAL Midget Racing Ambassador, which I think is NEAT!!!!
