Wheeler, I presume you hang out with the likes of Billy-B, Sharp Shooter, Rexone, Morg and the rest of the reprobates at the PB forums?
Too High Class for me! I spend (waste) my time over at River Dave's Place, it's a lot frendlier and you don't get yealled at for your spellin.
Wow! That is so cool! I'm going to post this pic over on River Daves Place, there are a couple of Ford lovers over there.
Hey ts3x65mph... I'm diggin' the Boss 429 powered flat, and I think I've seen the yellow Hydro-Flite with the wood deck (sitting next to it in the photo), at Bass Lake. If it's the same boat, the Hydro-Flite has a real nice 427 Ford. Hats off to those guys!
I spent 9 yrs working for Gaylord in his truck center in the 90's. I know part of his legacy was his drag boats he built for a short time I believe in the mid to late 60's? Heres a badge I found from an OG Gaylord boat. Anyone have any old Gaylord boat pics? I know Rudy Ramous drove for him for a while?
I wasnt going to post but for 20 years I had the SOCK IT TO ME belmont that hippie george crowle drove it was without the blower but the Rex Hutchinson hemi was still in the boat I sure miss that boat the wife did not like it. I bought the last Sanger mini day criuser to come out of the mold now that is gone to a neighbor and I have a Sea Ray. Getting old is a bitch Larry
Faded, At the Boat Racer's Reunion that was held at Long Beach Marine Stadium, during the Circle Boat Races, a few months back, there were, I believe THREE Gaylord flatbottoms on display. One was a beautiful yellow one with a big Chevy for power, all restored and nicely done. Boat freak Clyde Detrich had an un- restored, fairly well known Gaylord,( I think called "Un-Done"), that was built with early Hemi power originally, but was displayed as a bare hull on it's original trailer. I can't recall any of the owner's names except Detrich's. Gaylords are nice looking hulls. There were so many cool boats in the sixties. As a friend of mine in the V-Drive Club likes to say ...............keep America beautiful....set fire to an off shore, or wakeboard boat of your choice today.....
Their is a guy over on the V-Drive site putting a Gaylord together right now. http://www.v-driveboat.com/vweb/showthread.php?t=2698
I recently parted out a hemi powered wood hull runabout. pulled the motor and junked the hull. I still have the marine drive system. It is a chrysler 1to1 driven off the front of the motor. Vintage 1955 by the tags on the block. If any one needs a system like this pm me. I will make a deal. MickeyC
OK, not a drag boat exactly, but this is what me and another kid bought in 1957 when we were both 18-years old. It's called a "Crackerbox" and was made from a Glen L Marine kit. The "Crackerbox" was a specific class of 'oval track' (???) racing boat used mostly in California as I understand. Anyway, in our mind's fantasy, we had ourselves a "FLATBOTTOM"! Nobody in Colorado in 1957 when these pictures were taken had ever seen one before. It was a total of 12-FEET LONG(!) and had a hopped-up Ford flathead V8-60 in it. Direct drive, no reverse, but it had a regular Ford clutch -- hand operated. We later put a 283 SBC in it and scared the crap out of ourselves! It was our water-skiing boat, and I pulled it behind my '40 Ford coupe.
I cannot see the pictures think my work has me locked out will look for original pictures when it was the national record holder Larry ( the dumb one who sold the soc it to me boat )
WOW, JGMagoo1939...that boat is cool as hell, thanks for sharing them! Do you have any more pics and maybe one of it behind the '40?
The "Golden Phantom" was a Biesmeyer "Carribean" hull if memory serves. The boat was photographed lots, had a 348/409 Chevy for power. It appears that the bubble top is just for display, if you look at the relationship between the steering wheel and the top, you can see that there's not enough room to sit up straight and hold the wheel, with the top on. Brian Lynch just restored one of those hulls last summer, and brought the finished boat to the Bass Lake show. I found one for sale a while back, sitting on a side street, that had and old 430 Lincoln in it. Wild!
Here are a few of my Dad's Howard Hydro- late 70's- I would love to find this boat again! A project I got from my mechanic-67 AquaCraft And this winters project so far-
Murpa, For a fan of Stevens' boats like myself, you just made my day. Stevens hydros are fairly rare, and you've got a nice one there. It looks like you even have the original Vance trailer under it as well, (you added new fenders). I think it's cool that you replicated the original Stevens "target" design when you re-painted it. Your model, with the thru-hull exhausts and the rudder in the standard location, is a "hydro-skier". Both the "hydro-skiers", and the "hydro-dragsters" used the same deck from the Stevens 18' Silhouette flatbottom. Cool project.
hi contagious, I started this thread awhile ago and its still going strong, thanks for chiming in! Kind of ironic, my old Laveycraft flatbottom when purchased was named "Cuntagious" then we renamed it "Phuquinitup" cause thats what we were always doin to it!
That looks cool but I would think when you throw the throttle open the air would get pretty scarce pretty quick under the bubble. you might suffocate.
