Those are beautiful Dave! What are you going to run for tires?

  2. Ok.....we're slow, although I like to think of it as 'walking at our own damn pace':D .

those earlier mentiond 5 spoke spindle mounts were made by Ian Splatt (Dragway), in magnesium I believe. As for the above rims, I don not know (yet;) :) ) but as far as 'usless info goes', I do know that the above photo was taken at Calder in August '69, where during 'lunch time' there was a contest in pit lane for 'best turned out team and car', to which John English (and team, see above) were the winners.

Will have to dig out some old aussie pics for ya....

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

  3. Hey 97...... are those Dragway's alum' or magnesium. Are they called Dragways or Dragaways? Thanks for the info!

Aluminium .... at least I have always assumed they were. I don't own the car ( crew /engine builder/tuner, dogsbody ) , but I covet the wheels. If we go any faster we have to change the front spindles and wheels........ I have already staked my claim for the wheels ,for my 29 roadster altered....... (future plan , but parts have been collected).

Steve got the wheels with an old Topolino altered he bought from the South Island, it was a POS ,we don't know any other history.

There is an identical pair of wheels on the 69 Monaro funny car in Aussie called "The Shaker". It was recently restored and has featured in a couple of magazines.....that was how I identified the wheels.

The wheels are definitely dragway link here to the Dragway website.

  5. 15 by 6 "round spoke" crestlines. I later replaced them with 15 by 6 "sharp spoke" Americans to match the 15 by 8.5 Americans on the back.
I have a great set of 14 by 6 and 15 by 8.5 Americans for my 40 chevy coupe...photos coming.

  6. Does anyone know what brand of wheels these are on the front of my buddies T-bolt? He found them at a swap meet and thought they looked cool so he put them on the 'bolt. They are magnesium and are a pain to keep looking good!!!

Sorry I missed the question about what tires I'll use on the Halibrands. It will have to be something authentic. I have some nice old skinny bias-plies that would be fine for the front. The new tires I'd consider first are the Goodyear Blue Streak Vintage Sports Car Special.

I'm not sure who made the front wheel on the Thunderbolt, but it's styled along the lines of the old Keystone Rogue.

OK, as part of my 12 steps, I know I need to confess a few things. I'll start with this: I had a chance to own a VERY important set of 17" magnesium frontrunners, but it turned out that one was bent beyond use. I didn't take 'em. Can a badly bent magnesium 12-spoke be fixed? And run?

I went to the edge. And there I stood and looked down...

  12. I've got an old pair of Ansen 5 Spokes, not so skinny at 15 X 5 but they look good to me.....lol

  13. Probably not, but it would make a hell of a hose reel, albeit awfully expensive !!:D

  14. Stole this pic from another thread. What are these spindle mounts?

  15. Oops, it doesn't enlarge, sorry about that.

This thread is great! Caused me to way over extend my lunch hour. Heres a couple of my favorites. I found these at a swap meet a few years ago for $15 each. Had them home before I realized one was 14 and one was 15 inch. hahaha I should have know because they were dislay wheels. I have a pair of 13's like this. Was it common to run 13's in the front on drag cars? Anyway this thread is a blast. I too am addicted to old wheels. Steve

As long as we are talking old wheels...........I need a match for a wheel like this. Keystone I think. 15 by 6 4 3/4 bolt pattern. An early wheel I was told. Notice the center cap hole is lacking those annoying screw holes. I started polishing and now understand how dedicated one must be to do a whole set of wheels. If anyone has a single laying around please let me know. Steve

I too. am a wheel whore. Nothing like a great set of wheels to make the rest of the ride look great. Like a chick with a great set of knockers minus the bag the face! Here's a pic of my wheels that I will either put on my '53 Plymouth wagon or my '54 Chrysler chopped 2 door. KNUX!

    Great thread.

(I had to get a subsrciption for it so I can have some visual ideas for my truck when I can afford some.)

  24. Kevin, I think some goof ball cut it up and threw it in a dumpster, but don't worry........some nut in Ventura got it and welded it back together............

These are "Safety Racing" magnesium wheels from the 60's. They were used primarily by oval racers on Stock Cars and Sprint/Champ cars.

These are 6-pin for knock-off hubs. They were also made for Wide-five hubs. There were many variations available depending on mixing differing width front and back sections.

These are the narrow back sections which are 6 inches wide. Backs were also available in wider 9" width. The front sections were available in one inch increments from 1" to about 6" and front sections worked with either the 6-pin or W-5 back sections.

There were also 1" spacer rings, so a wheel up to 16" in width could have been made up, or as these are, as narrow as 7" wide.
