picked this up this past weekend and remembered seeing a surfer thread on here, thuoght maybe some of you may know if its worth restoring or if its a lost cause. if its too far gone i'll probably just sand it smooth and pinstripe the heck out of it. sorry for the poor quality on the pics

Don't know anything about saving them, but you can always clean it up and make a table out of it.

An old Hobie is definitely has collector value, that's like the 57 chevy of surfboards. That board has great patina, clean it and hang it on the wall.

DO NOT PAINT IT! hang it just as it is , do any thing else and you detract from the "cool factor"

DON"T CLEAN IT! Just hang on to it. Put on the wall in your garage. If you want to sell it let me know.

I'd shorten it, put casters on it and use it for a creeper.

    Get out the buffer.

Start with a good cleaning with paint thinner, don't use lacquer thinner and certainly not acetone. Then start with body scrub and work your way all through the polish grits ending with a good paste wax and it will shine like a new dime. If you want to get really crazy sand the whole thing with 1500 just like you would a car to color sand it. Be careful not to catch any open edges with the buffer. I have several old boards I did this too and they look great. I never fix the dings in them as it adds some character and then they show their age.

i havent seen any #'s on it but i havent looked real hard either, where should they be?

  20. Shapers put them in different places, usually above the fin, sometimes on the deck. There might be a name following a "for", that might help.. Look around the label. The upper one, 1964,the #'s on the deck at the label, the lower ,2002,one is above the fin. Same shaper, different eras.

  21. What a coincidence, I watched Big Wednesday last night. There used to be an old Gordon and Smith longboard up in my folk's attic, wonder if it's still there?

Cool board hard to tell form the pics looks like it has some balsa and foam- not worth a bunch if it has foam (means its not real old), but could be worth redoing. In '90 I picked up a old balsa and redwood board for $30 bucks, spent $200 to have it restored and sold it for $1200- I have been out of the scene since then not sure what the market is now but its cool the way it is.

I have a question, seeing as how you guys seem to know your stuff when it comes to surfboards..I have a surfboard that I am going to put on my wagon. The guy we bought the car from was a long time surfer from the Outer Banks, NC. I told him I wanted to make my car a "surf wagon", so he gave me the surfboard. It was ugly as all get out when he gave it to me. It was painted purple and gold. I decided one day I would try to see what was under all that nasty paint, and found logos underneath it that read "BETTIS SURFBOARDS".I know nothing at all about surfboards seeing as I am from the mountains in Tennessee. lol. But I would like to know some history on this board. I have googled the name, and all I have come up with was the board shapers name was Matt Bettis. Any of you guys know anything else about it? Is it old? Rare? Also, what is the best way to get all that nasty paint off, without hurting the board itself. Any info would be very much appreciated!!
