I think the location had a lot to do with engine choices back in the 50's-60's. Here in NJ, junkyards would pull engines from desireable cars as soon as they came in. And sell them as cores to rebuilders. who inturn sold them to garage's doing replacements.

In the early thru late 60's, I never saw a Hemi in a yard. Even SBC's weren't left in the cars til the tri-fives were ten years old and the demand for the small displacement ones dropped off.

Also you gotta remember that with the old style oils, 50,000 miles was a high mileage worn engine that already might have been apart for a valve job and maybe rings. We used to have truck customers with Continentals and FHfords that would swap engines for a rebuilt one every year.

So I ended up buying the 1958 Studebaker Sweepstakes 289, with the clutch ***embly, & 3 speed overdrive ******...

this motor has the rear oil sump ( like a Ford motor ) but has an AC/ Delco distributor ( so I should be able to use one of the tach drive Vette units )

I'm guessing that the rear sump motor, & my straight axle are going to cause me to need to adjust motor position, & limit lowering, more so than the Chevy crate motors... anyone want to talk or show how you we able to lower those front ends, with a rear sump motor & straight axle ???

my goal is lower than stock ( spring under conversion ) but, not dragging on the ground, maybe 14" tires would help with the effect ???

  3. How about a Slant Six ??...Lots of goodies available...semi rare in hotrods...makes decent power...stick or automatic and as far as Hudson sixes go they are way cool...nothong but maybe spark plugs interchange between the 212s and 308s...different sized blocks.

When I was a teenager we used to put Chrysler 6s in dodges & plymouths. Slightly longer but an easy swap

Believe me I'm not trying to give you a hard time here, but perhaps your best bet would be to introduce yourself on the introductions board, and then post your own thread on the main board asking for ***istance specific to your requirements rather than burying your questions in other peoples threads and hoping someone comes across it. There are a hell of a lot of extremely knowledgeable people on this board but they can't answer your question if they don't know you have asked it.
    Best of luck

The Poly is the first that came to my mind. They really are good engines, reliable, sufficient power, decent options for transmissions as well. The problem with these are that speed parts are virtually non-existent and the ones that are out there are made of gold. I know a friend who bought a whole car simply because the 3x2 intake on it was worth as much as the whole car. Mopar people are nuts

  9. You mean it has a front sump instead of a rear sump? A rear sump pan wouldn't cause you any problems at all.

I think you can get a pan and pickup from an Avanti or a Commander or a Hawk to move the sump to the rear of the engine if you need to. I would trial fit it before i invested any money in a different pan and pickup, it may not cause you a problem at all.
