Yes you are right. All the pieces of timber are numbered. It is listed by the historic places trust and is also on the local councils heritage list.It sits on a large section and we have just put a 6mx9m garage on the back.We paid less than $60,000 when we bought it and have had it rented out.One of our kids will probably end up living in it
No f'in way! My daughter went to kindergarten at Doss; had we stayed in Austin she would've been a sophomore at Anderson, and my son at Murchison. I'm guessing you went to all three. Of all the houses in NW Hills I think my favorite belonged to Dave Huff, whom I used to work with. If I remember right it was at the corner of Rockledge and Edgefield. Incredible MCM design, built surrounding a central courtyard. Dave and his wife Sue had lived in it from new, circa 1966.
Here are a couple more MCM gems from Palm Springs, photos are from 2003. This is the Peter Lawford house, which was for sale when my wife took this pic... $1.2 mil, which seemed pretty cheap for a house owned by an actual Rat Packer, and the actual site where JFK boned Marilyn Monroe. The lodge atop the mountain overlooking Palm Springs. The only access is by aerial tramway. I believe this was the real inspiration for the place in North by Northwest. Sure, everybody's seen pictures of the Palm Springs Kauffman house by Richard Neutra. But how often do you see pictures of the driveway, with a pickup sitting there? A few more random residences from around Palm Springs...
Me and the wifey went to a Xmas party tonight at a Keck & Keck house in Highland Park, IL. The house was built in 1962, and has an oval / football floorplan, like a donut with a huge indoor pool at the center (12' deep at the big end). The pool roof is retractable for summer use, and uses the all the original hardware down to the motors. Other kickass features included a huge walk-in sauna and one of the coolest home bars I've ever seen. Damn, straight out of a Bond movie.
Here's mine, Built in 1893. There is an article written in a book called "Sketchs of Duluth's Past" about our house. The writter of the article is Margaret Calkin Banning. She is a famous author. She grew up in our house. We are selling it in the next couple of years. The kids are starting collage and we don't need a big house anymore. We have 3 acres on a private bay on a lake 20 miles out of town. Were planning on building an Atomic Ranch style house there.
Here's our other place. We currently have this one up for sale! 4.8 acres, 440' of nice frontage on a 5800 acre lake! Very private! This is our cabin located on the Whiteface Reservior. Here's a link to more photo's and info. We would love to just keep it but with the big house in town, two kids in collage, and the other lots we want to start building on.... Can't keep it all! www.harrisbaycabin.com
My home on 10 acres in rural Nova Scotia, built in 1905, has over 3000 sq.ft. of living including the full stone foundation basement. Top of my hay field looking west. My house on left with the small white barn. Top of my hay field looking east.
^ that's bitchin'! looks a lot like where i grew up in western PA... i love my house, but my closest neighbor is 12 feet away. 10 acres in a rural area would be awesome...
Here's ours... It was the "Model Home" for the subdivision Built in early 1941... Winter last year Summer 06 Someday we'll build this, but not in MN...
Thanks go to Wingnutz for helping me get the contract on this place! I just got this modern November 1st. It was custom built in 1965. It is the second house from the water. I can see the ocean from the lawn. My street is all old Victorians. We really stick out over here. The house has some history already. The original owner was murdered in the house, and it remains a cold-case file. http://jewishbreakingnews.blogspot.com/2007/09/slaying-still-unsolved-perth-amboy.html Here are some pics. The den with the fireplace is my home office. It also has a full wet bar hidden in the large cabinet. The house is full of odd buttons and controls. The electricity is on a relay system. There are 3 master panels in the house to control everything.
Damn Zenor, all those MCM photos make me feel all funny "down there" i love that stuff. That Keck&Keck house is the shit! Im a frequent atomic racnch and Dwell reader (drooler) any other suggestions for some MCM porn? someday...
Heres a pic from a couple months ago when half of an oak tree hit my house. I have some better pics somewhere but this will do for now. It smashed the corner of the clay tile roof and sort of tore the copper gutter off.
here's a few photos of our place... it's a 1950 sinclair gas station in fayetteville arkansas, complete with pumps, floor lift and grease pit. when we first got the place it had been empty for 10 years and heavily vandalized. we spent the first winter huddled up to the wood stove sleeping in the office. the next year we added on 900 sq. ft. of living space in the style of the original station with used block and commerical doors including an overhead door from the old cadillac dealer in town. the place is now comfortable and cozzy thanks to kim my wife. i totally recommend finding and old service station on the outskirts of your town and saving it from the dozers. it's great for car guys and artist wifes whos projects are the central part of their lifes. home maintenance is easy and and the design is efficient and simple. plus you can probably get into it pretty cheap. fayetteville is close to the hamb drags and we want to invite folks to stop by on their drive through and have a beer.
Great place.....any problems with underground storage tanks? That would be my concern with buying an old gas station.
yeah poncho62, you're right about the tanks. they can be expensive to remove. at our place the epa required the tanks to be removed by the past owner because of leaks. so we didn't have that expense. but the concrete was busted up where the tanks were when we got it. and we haven't been able to afford fixing that. it's a slow process and another ongoing project. the hgtv people filmed our place about 2 years ago for a program called building character. about people that make their houses from structures not intended to be houses. i think it's still accessible on their website, check it out... thanks for your interest
Yes this is actually the name of the town I live in... And this is my house. Built in the '20s as a Elevator house.
dont have a pic, too cold to go out there and stand in the snow. But mine was built in the early 50s. Brick & wood
We have now lived 2 weeks in our new home that we just bought. It was designed by architect in 1967. It's kinda art-deco style, pretty neat. Will post some photos later after small renovation. Painted the yellowish living room walls back to pure white and wooden supports back to very dark brown. My wife is an architect so I'm hoping the new home is getting nice... --mika
Here is a few pics of the inside of our house. We have only lived there for about 6 months now. our living room couch in the basement, we collect haywood wakefield i also collect Pyrex
