WONDERFUL idea. RE metal boxes in general, why the heck are they so popular? IMHO the last thing you need is a metal box around your battery posts when you are trying to either attach jumpers or even just work on the cable ends with wrenches - too many opportunities for a short. Same goes for those high buck billet cages that hold down Optimas, etc. No chance of a short there, eh? Mr Bobo's idea - with the access door makes the best sense with a metal box to me. Easy access, less chance for shorts, etc. Gary

    Gary,
Thanks for the compliment. Box is wrapped in 1/16" rubber to prevent any shorts.
I see your in Tampa, I moved from NJ to Port Orange, Fl several years ago.

Always enjoy seeing ideas that over come a short coming or lack of space,or just cover up a other wise not pretty spot. Hotrods are fairly often short on space for haulling stuff when needed.
On my own hotrod, I found out Ford offered early 1930s a rear folding luggagerack as a add-on to rear bumper. Its being repop,an Speedway amung others has them. I modafided mine too just bolt on with two big wingnuts so it can come off or on EZ an fast. In my case its if wife feels good enough to come along ,so I can load up her wheelchair for her. This photo shows it folded in up,but it folds down to hold stuff. abetters1.jpg

I didn't go ice cooler but I thought I would share. Mine is a vintage ladies Samsonite travel case that I stripped the interior out of except for the mirror in the lid. Lined it with heat protectant and a battery tray pad, slapped on some stickers and called it done. Different but mine.

And it isn't metal. Ill add a AGM battery closer to start up. Before I mount it to the trunk floor I will remove the hinges and add a couple of latches so the top some off for easier maintenance and hook up. Cable exit out the rear out of site.

HRP, that silver embossed Pepsi cooler is probably quite valuable. Too nice to cut up for battery/tool storage. Some things become a cliche' and sadly I think cooler battery boxes are there. Sure, it works and is clearly better than a plastic boat box for a battery, but what about engineering a different solution? The o/t street rod I'm doing, the owner struggled for quite some time with containing his battery. I took a page out of my Packard knowledge and hung it under the trunk area, covered, remote charge posts and the cl***ic drag car "jerk off" kill switch. Easy, gone, safe. How often do you remove the battery? Not very. Coolers? Old metal ones? To keep stuff cool, what else. Mine (actually not but identical).

My folks must have been keen tea drinkers in the traditional English way as we found a dozen or so boxes in their house, plus a box approx 3ft by 2ft 6" that had been full of tea at some stage. Kind of looks discreet and fits with the used look of the interior.
The tool box beside it is an old weathered leather doctors bag, to match the weathered 1950 snooker hall leather interior.

Here's the old wooden beer case box I have my battery in. It also has room for jumper cables, oil, brake fluid, and some very basic tools.
