Good stuff, but unfortunately not as early as I'd like. Does anyone know where you can get repops of earlier style California plates? I'm specifically interested in the black 1941 style with the rounded corners. We've got a company here in the UK (States Plates) that say they'll make custom sizes but it's impossible to get them to answer the phone.

I heard of a guy making vanity plates from old licence. He cuts the letters with a lazer, then tig welds them back together. Cool or what?

I don't know how technical the DMV gets and I don't know how your Elky is registered but in 1959 truck plates had the numbers first followed by the 2 letters.

I was disappointed. I wanted 1951 (the year of the newspapers in the doors) but I settled for 1956.

I did not know that. Thanks for the info. I believe it's registered as a truck.
it's part car/truck so I figured it wouldn't matter how the tags were lettered.
I guess i'll wait and see what DMV says when I bring em in.

You can have CA vintage plates on your car even if you are not in that state?
If so i'd like to find a set since I did buy my Elk from CA anyway.
