Vintage Mickey Thompson Speed Parts

  1. I've got a single hanging on the wall

  2. I have this dual magneto angle drive aluminum casting. Unmachined and no drive gears though. I believe it's made for a Ford flathead, and it's marked "Thompson" but I'm not sure if it was made by M/T. Can anyone confirm if it's been made by M/T and the correct application? Keith Black used a set of Mickey's rods in this 331 Chrysler. They held up better than the block, when we put a 6-71 on it. It was built in '68 for a Jr Fuel car. 2012-11-24 211554.jpg 2012-11-24 211622.jpg

  5. Great stuff in here. Does anyone know the crank seal p/n for the THOMPSON 392 timing cover?

I wonder if it is adaptable to a timing cover such as this? IDK that Mickey ever made flathead parts.

    Hello,

Our experience with Mickey Thompson was at Lion’s Dragstrip and with his shop in the Westside of Long Beach, near our house. He moved into the vacated building of the old Joe Mailliard’s Automotive Engineering Shop when Mailliard moved to downtown Long Beach on a more public access street. It was on the 2nd busiest street in Long Beach, besides PCH.

Then the Mickey Thompson Shop became close to our house at the 1410 COTA location in the Westside of Long Beach.
    upload_2023-1-16_3-22-52.png
from this Cota Ave. shop, to just down the block to this expanded shop:

Then finally to this shop next door to the Santa Fe Importers Deli store on 1419 Santa Fe Avenue.

All in a two block radius:

    upload_2023-1-16_3-24-51.png
Soon after Mickey Thompson moved their offices to the next big street over next to the Santa Fe Italian Import business. The two places where they usually had lunch were the Santa Fe Importers next door and around the next block, the original, Golden Star Char-broil Hamburger Restaurant on PCH.

Why does the 1410 Cota address sound familiar? During this early history of Westside of Long Beach speed shops, Joe Mailliard had the building, but then in 1959, he made the move to a better public access location (the 2nd most busiest street in the whole city) near the local city automotive dealers and our old high school.

The new business with showroom, parts and an open door for garage mechanical work. It was 3 blocks South of our old high school in the downtown area. It was the first hot rod/drag race speed shops in the whole downtown Long Beach area.

    Note:

Mickey Thompson ad for an involvement in the hot Chevy motor build races: right up my alley so to speak…

Later on, even Mickey Thompson got in on the Chevy crowd’s hungry appetite for the “need for speed.”

So, reading the Mickey Thompson book made anyone think right back to 1959-60. That shop was about 4-5 blocks from our house and we were frequent visitors there. This book was fun to read. We followed his exploits in all of the Drag News and Hot Rod Magazines of the time period. The photos were the same scenes we saw in person as teenagers.

Now, with this book on the career of Mickey Thompson, it is clear, concise and pretty great to relive local history, despite the wrong facts about the "altered coupe" stopping the racing on August 13. (page 63)

Mr Go-Twichy, I just saw the image you posted of the Mickey Thompson 392 Hemi front timing cover you posted back in Dec 2013. I also noticed the M/T blower idler bracket that mounts to the 6-71 front cover. It appears to be made of aluminum. Is this correct? If so, might you have the original part number that pertains to this style of bracket? I am looking for one made out of aluminum rather than magnesium. If you happen to know someone who has such a bracket, I am extremely interested. Thank You

Mr Al Bundy, I just saw a posting you placed back on Dec 2008 that showed an image of a Mickey Thompson blower idler bracket that attached to the front cover of a 6-71. I am looking for one that is made out of aluminum rather than magnesium. If you know someone that may have one I am extremely interested. Thank You

I picked up this 4 cylinder Hemi a few years ago and found a mickey crank inside. I strapped a Potvin to it.

I just acquired this NOS SBC 2 pc front cover. It came with a gear drive, but I don't think they will work together. Due to the large crank hole, perhaps for marine use ? IMG_4267.jpg IMG_4269.jpg

I can’t believe I missed this thread years ago when it was started. I’ve always loved Mickey Thompson and followed his career as I grew up and had some of his speed equipment on my rides. But I had no idea of what all he made or what’s still out there to be had. Definitely going to be following this and if I can find some of my old BBC stuff I’ll post it.

Not that I wouldn't be willing Marty but with your portfolio of work, (and that's just what I've witnessed) would lead me to think you would not need instruction.
Besides, I know you have at least one other friend that would be better qualified.
I only commented because I thought you might consider using it sans gear drive. Whittling out an aluminum sleeve to make up for the larger diameter front cover bore, I figured that's all that would be needed to accept a damper seal.
Which by the way, that cover is a pretty cool piece.

Now, all I need is to find someone that thinks it's cooler than I do. The High Performance Swap at Clark Co. is this Sunday, you should write it on your calendar.

It's been so long since I've been to a swap meet I'm not sure I would know how to act.
