I don’t recall the crossed flags above “Fuel Injection” on the one at the dinner that evening/night, could have been there but I just don’t recall. Because at that point I’d only heard a rumor of GM having come out with a FI system, what got burnt in my brain was the wording since the only FI I had seen at drag-strips was the individual cylinder straight tube injectors and I couldn't image how that could be under the closed hood. It was a long time later when I saw a picture of GM’s injection system, before I realized how it would fit under a closed hood. The one thing I’m absolutely sure of it was a relativity new cheap bodied solid black ’57 Chevy and the FI wording was on the front finder.
Indeed. In the mid-80's I worked at a gas station going thru school. Back then the State Troopers took their cars home with them and were responsible for maintenance. We did this with several units, including a 5.0 chase Mustang. This horsey had a big aftermarket H pipe with no cats - certainly not factory. I asked the trooper about it - he grinned and said he knew nothing of it nor the special tune it had.
Well there it is. I'm a Ford guy but the fact that the Ford is the only one in this pic that is broken down checks out.
It was a seized car. Several states use those, FL comes to.mind. There is nothing to be gained by removing CAT's which is a federal offense. An H or X pipe is one of the few mods that are a good idea. Although he was driving it, it is likely the trooper didn't know much more than you did about the car but liked impressing you. That being said, there were bunches of those highway patrol notchback Fox Mustangs and they were a lot of fun as were the Camaros.
I think it might be the car of the city photographer that he may had trade for a '59 two Biscayne later as they appears in lot of photos...
