Lloyd Ruby # 38, left and Jimmy Reece were Car owner Jack Zinks primary drivers on the midwest midget circuits . Photo comes from the book To Indy and beyond The Life of Racing legend Jack Zink . Around 20 years ago I had the honor of visiting the Jack Zink personal race car museum on his ranch in Tulsa while attending the Chilli Bowl. A very nice man, served us lunch and talked with us racers for quite awhile. His winning cars are sitting as they came off the track, not restored, as raced, very kool IMO.
The caption on this photo says Why not a pregnant Chief Mechanic . It shows Rex Mays with his wife Dorothy who would give birth to Rex III . The midget Rex is working on would win the Gilmore Grand Prix on Thanksgiving with Mel Hansen as his driver ! photo comes from Bob Schillings great book Pole Position Rex Mays
Midget driver Cec Warren set a unique precedent in midget racing in the 1940,s He took his wife with him to every race as she was the Chief Mechanic . At the time she was the only women registered in Australian speedways as a female mechanic. Thinking wifes were involved some in all racers lives, if nothing else, for putting up with it. Myself in my later years racing, my crew was my wife and our dog.
