The new 1956 Plymouths were so exciting, that 571,634 units were sold. During the same period, 1,392,847 new Fords were sold. As far as the sales of new 1956 Chevy's, 1,574,740 were sold during the same period. You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all of the time. It's not so much that there was anything specifically wrong with the 1956 Plymouths, it was that there was not one thing remotely exceptional about them...

So what was so "exceptional" about a '56 Ford? I would have rather had a V8 Plymouth! IIRC, in 55 or 56, Buick was actually #3 in sales.

With some exceptions (most likely the engines) , the mid-1950 Chevys, Fords and Plymouths were pretty much on a par with each other. On the other hand, General Motors and the Ford Motor Co. were more robust corporations, way ahead of Chrysler Corp. at the time, and had a much larger national dealer program.
