Hello, We thought our dad’s line of Buick sedans was a massive amount of steel moving on down the road. But, for us growing up, the brothers had lots of room to mess around in the back seat when we got dragged around to visit friends and cohorts in other cities. In looking back, it was great that they were so big. From the 41 Buick Fastback through the years to the 57 blue Roadmaster. They were big. In the years after we got married, I was able to become friends with my wife’s grandparents that still lived in So Cal. They were the only "OLD" people that attended our small wedding, due to the fact that we wanted only our parents and immediate family to attend. (look who is calling someone else…. OLD, ha!) But, we did have a huge "friends and family" gathering in Los Angeles for our reception. Alas, our older grandparents could not make that event. Jnaki One day, we went to their small house in central Orange County for a visit. We were surprised at what we saw in the driveway. A huge 1958 Buick 4 door sedan, for our 89-90 plus, grandparents? His stature could barely see over the huge hood and at the time, it was labeled by automotive journalists as the most chrome on any car in automotive history! Yowza!!! It must have weighed down, the already heavy Buick sedan, but it was stylish for a lot of people. Thank goodness the 1958 year was not in our dad’s Buick sedan rotation every 4 years. His 57 blue Roadmaster sedan was big enough, but this 58 4 door Buick took the top prize as one for the books. The factory must have learned a lesson as the following years, as large as Buick sedans go, they never came up with the chrome laden sedans/wagons again. Note: One Christmas lunch gathering, we all were at this cute little Santa Ana, CA house. It was a packed house with the whole families in attendance. My wife’s grandfather had to go to the local store to get something missing from the festivities’ food supply. We all were guests and he would not allow us to run errands.. So, we saw the big Buick sedan zip backwards at relatively high speed out of the single car garage, down the narrow driveway and shoot off towards the local store for the supplies. How in the world did that huge chrome laden, Buick not have any scratches as a daily driver? We will never know…YRMV
These remind me of my favorite “toy” and “candy” stores that I liked going to as a kid. I miss the old Western Auto and Pep Boys of yesterday.
