Less than 100 Playboy cars were made by a private company in bld 38 at the GM Tonawanda facility. The Playboy company started in 1947 and by 1951 went bankrupt. I attended an anniversary show in Buffalo a few years ago where several surviving Playboy cars were on display.

El Morro Beach and Point. The Coast Highway is above the cliff berm on the left side of the photo.
(Currently, the whole area has been renamed Crystal Cove State Beach and is still a great oceanfront location.)

    Hello,

Our dad used to take here as part of his surf fishing adventures along the coast. He got us as close to the point and rocks as necessary to fish from the sandy shore. While we played in the water down the beach with our mom, he fished to his heart’s delight. At the time, anyone could drive into the sandy shore development and park, just steps from the water’s edge.

Then, years later, when we were surfing in this North Laguna Beach surf break, the waves came in during the same time Camp Pendleton beaches had good waves. So, we would drive slowly down hill on the Corona Del Mar side of Coast Highway and check out the surf. It is not as good as the Camp Pendleton surf spots or the Dana Point point breaks, but no one is usually out surfing these waves on the average drive by… When we did slow down in the Flathead 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery, it was necessary to downshift to 2nd and in some cases, first gear to get up the other side sloping highway grade.

One day, it was peeling off of the huge cliffs and rocky outcroppings. It was empty and rideable. So, we drove in to the far reaches of the development quietly. Then went out and surfed in some of the clearest waters in all of So Cal. The waves were primarily “lefts.” But, that was why we learned to surf well in either direction. Places like these “Point Breaks” do get crowded on the second and third day of a swell. We got it on the first day with 4 guys out having a lot of fun!

My wife and I have been coming down Coast Highway in what seems like forever. Since the late 40s for me and together, we started in 1966 in our El Camino and later, on our Harley+ 327 Ford Sedan Delivery to get to Laguna Beach and points South. So, we knew the highway and view points. This past Friday, we enjoyed our millionth time coming down the highway from Newport Beach area and enjoyed the swell breaking… with no one out. One of the best drives anywhere along a coastline. YRMV

Then later, we were amazed that the normally crowded highway through the Laguna Beach coastal city was relatively empty. It was a Thursday and the off-summer crowds don’t start their tours until the lunch hours.

It is still nice to live in a coastal city if not for the location, but for the never ending views and wellness opportunities. YRMV

@65pacecar …post of an early postcard of the El Morro Beach site. Currently the area where the green growth stops is a huge privately owned house built on top of the cliff’s edge. Originally, it was owned by a dentist. He must have pulled a lot of teeth to get that house finished. YRMV
