They built ‘em, but not very many (265s in 1957). I wondered if they were used mainly on fleet orders, on base models, like this one.

1924 photo of Larry Beals in his HISSO powered Mercedes. This was a factory race car built in 1908, sold to Spencer Wishart, who finished 4th in the first INDY 500 in 1911. Beals ran it with the HISSO V8 in the mid 1920's, then it was put in a car museum in 1939. Museum needed money so it was offered in sealed bid auction, cowl and hood were missing, but it looked just like the above photo. One point two million, to someone in Germany that pulled the HISSO and restored it back to 1908. I did get to sit in it before it was shipped, the oldest INDY car I've ever sat in. I talked to an under bidder and he regrets the loss of this early "Hot Rod", he would have left as is. Bob
