But, our Buick cars were what we thought were the only cars our dad bought. We were right until his last one every 4 years until 1982. Much to our surprise, my wife also had a Buick in her family back in the 50s, when they had moved to So Cal to stay for a job that her dad just got out West. Instead of coastal So Cal, they selected a city in the inland portion. It was always hot and a long drive to the beach from there. The family had two cars. A Chevy sedan and an old Ford coupe. Obviously, in the early 50s, the cars were for the dad to use to go to work. My wife does not remember those two old cars as it was a growing up moment out West and not OKC where they originally left for a better job for her dad. Jnaki So, this cool photo was in the hot city of Pacoima, CA in front of their old 40s stucco sided small house. actually, most of the houses were small and in a neighborhood that the houses looked relatively the same. Two bedrooms one bath and a one or two car small garage was usually the standard. Out pops this old family photo of a 47 Buick Convertible in front of the Pacoima house. It was my wife and her mom in “her” new/old car just for herself. Her dad did not like the convertible top up or down. He stuck to the sedan and coupe. Now, the convertible was just for her mom for visiting friends, shopping and the sometimes, long drive to the beach with the kids. That was the start for independence for women/wives/mothers in this early time period. A car for themselves...YES! Knowing my wife’s dad, the Buick convertible was not his favorite and he probably never rode in it with the whole family. They all poured into the Chevy sedan for family trips, with the dad driving. Times have changed, starting in 1950 Pacoima, CA YRMV
When I first saw the photo it made me smile. Today the parents would be charged with abuse. Really sad what's going on.
