    Hello,

Tom Corbett, Space Cadet is a TV series that aired 1950–1955, depicting the fictional character Tom Corbett. The episodes were 15 minutes (weekdays) and 30 minutes (Saturdays). We quit watching the series in 1955 when we were entrenched in our new/old house. We had plenty of different things to keep us occupied during the day and the family TV watching when we all were viewing a new show called “Gunsmoke.”

Over the years, our dad was a fishing fanatic, learned while growing up in San Pedro and Terminal Island across the channel as a kid and teenager. He wanted us to also like fishing and we went on many road trips to southern Orange County for surf fishing, rocky coastal fishing and quiet bay fishing in Newport Beach Harbor.

But, the epitome of fishing with our dad were the very early deep sea fishing trips out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach. We went on commercial “all day” fishing trips to the various spots around Catalina Island. Since our dad had gone on many trips with his friends, he had become a “local” aboard the popular big fishing boats. So, he introduced us to those “rough” deep water, early morning trips to some of the best fishing areas we ever experienced.

On one of our East end, deep water, Catalina Island trips, a friend took this photo of all of us and our catch of tasty fish, soon to be barbequed for dinner. To increase the feel of personalized fishing, our dad made custom fishing rods for each of his sons. I was smaller and did not like the longer poles, so he made me custom shorter fishing pole on the far left, next to me. I still have that pole and reel.

Today and since this photo, we have used the small custom pole/reel to fly larger kites for long distance contests and short distance modern kites when our granddaughter was a toddler standing on the beach flying her acrobatic zooming kites. It was easy to reel in the kites, even on very windy days.

But, look at my brother’s shirt. What to do with old famous shirts based on popular TV shows that are no longer popular and on TV? Why it is a custom Space Cadet Shirt, perfect for all day of fishing on a deep water trip, so what, if it gets stained or dirty. Ha!

It was an “ideal Christmas gift” way back then…YRMV
