The Mission San Luis Rey is located at 4050 Mission Avenue in Oceanside, and was designated California State Historical Landmark #239 in 1936. The 1815 Mission Church was designated National Historic Landmark #70000142 in 1970. Hello, From the time the only road back into the inland areas of oceanside to Bonsall and Fallbrook, the nearby 76 highway was one of the more modern ways to travel inland San Diego County, East. Other early times we all had to take Mission Road. So, aptly named, as it runs right by the Mission San Luis Rey. We used to drive on Mission Road to get inland to visit some friends who lived in Bonsall and Fallbrook. So, we did drive by the area of the mission property. These days, the northern property area borders on the Camp Pendleton compound and it is close to the North-South I-5 freeway. Jnaki In the 60s, we used to surf at the Oceanside Harbor Jetties North and South. The southern break is at the mouth of the San Luis Rey River, which runs from the inland portions of this area to the ocean. It is one of those rivers that after any rain, it looks like the rivers and streams all entering the Pacific Ocean and then the waters at the mouth of those rivers becomes polluted. So, no surfing for several days, perhaps a week or so. The northern jetty has big waves during swells and is also the entrance to the boat harbor. Sometimes during the big swell days, there are crazy boat captains that test the abilities of their boats, power and sail to go up the face of the incoming waves and try to get over them to the open ocean just beyond the end of the jetty. It is something to watch as it is entertaining and dangerous to the boat occupants. But, located just South of the river is the San Luis Rey Mission. It was founded in 1798. It is the 17th Mission founded in California.
