Looked that aircraft up; The plane, named "Miss Doran", was built by the Buhl Aircraft Company in Marysville, MI, in 1927. It, along with 14 other planes, was entered in the Dole Air Race from Oakland, CA to Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. Of the 15 planes entered, three crashed before the race killing three people, two were disqualified and two withdrew. "Miss Doran" left Oakland Aug. 16, 1927, and was lost at sea. Only two of the remaining eight planes made it to Hawaii. Two others crashed, two turned back for repairs and the other two crashed at sea. One of the repaired planes went out looking for the two lost at sea and never came back. All in all, ten people died attempting this race and six airplanes were lost. All this for a prize of $25,000.
