Jim Clark in his Lotus Ford waits for the start of the 1964 Indianapolis 500. As far as I know that was the only time that Clark ever covered his face with adhesive tape like shown in the photo. Engines leaked a lot of oil in those days and after 500 miles drivers were often covered in oil and tire grit; something Clark wasn't used to in Formula One. He needn't have bothered as he went out early after his left rear Dunlop tire (shown as well) started chunking throwing the wheel out of balance and breaking the left rear suspension putting him out of the race early. In later 500s Clark wore cloth bandanas like most of the American drivers had been using for years as many of them started out on dirt tracks.
Jim Hurtubise after winning at Langhorne, PA in 1960. Jimmy Bryan crashed fatally on the first lap and some witnesses claimed that the car of Hurtubise had driven under Bryan's car while it was in the air. In the photo there is a dent in the nose which might have been caused by Bryan's car. No one seems to know for sure.
