In 1913, automobiles replaced horse-drawn stages on the 14-mile route from El Portal to Yosemite Valley, reducing travel time from four hours to just one hour and thirty-five minutes. Visitors rode in open-air motorized stages, similar to the one seen here, ushering in a new era of travel to Yosemite.
