Hello, If there is anything from those old teenage drive-in movie days, it is those speakers on a cord hanging in the rolled up window on the passenger side. Why the passenger side? Well, we teenagers always got out on the driver’s side and had the pole next to the passenger door. Long Beach had 4 drive-in movie theaters. So, there were plenty of spaces for “movie watching.” They were located in 4 separate areas of Long Beach. The closest one to our house was a couple of blocks from Lion’s Dragstrip. It was so familiar and old hat, that when the metal speakers got moved out of the newer drive in theaters, the latest thing was a cord the clipped on to the car’s antenna. And the sound came in through the car’s speakers. So, what happens to those that do not have a nice sounding radio or no radio? My wife and I took our son’s portable cassette tape recorder with two speakers and connected the drive-in wire clip to the portable radio’s antenna. Instant sound. Jnaki The only thing left for us from 1960, is a single Pacific Theater original speaker. The original wire was in the car door, dropped down to the lower edge and when I got back in the driver’s door, all was good. I thought the speaker was still on the pole, but the sound was coming into the interior. The movie was so-so and when it was over, we drove out of the end spot to the driveway. Instantly, a jerk was felt on the car’s forward progress. I thought I had run over a can or brick. But, we continued on to the main outside road. When I got home, I noticed a short wire hanging out of the passenger side door. And, inside on the rear floor was a grey metal speaker and a short cut off wire. Ha! So, now, a remnant of the drive-in speaker was in our newly created hot rod, “rumpus room.” It was crudely connected to an AM/FM radio and those were our teenage sounds when working in the backyard garage. Note: These days it has followed us from apartment to house to house until it ended up as a bookshelf book holder. It was still in its heavy state and acted to keep the row of books upright. I did take it apart to see if I could add in a stereo speaker. But to me, it was priceless as a teenage iconic object. It is one of the oldest things in our house, except for me… Our young granddaughter thought it was a strange looking object sitting on our bookshelf…YRMV
