Hello, One year our dad took us to the Pasadena Rose Bowl. It was going to be a crowded football event, so he called an old friend who lived in Pasadena to go to the game with us, my brother, my dad and his friend. Luckily, his friend lived in Pasadena near the Rose Bowl. (lower photo red arrow) So, it was a visit for lunch prior to the game and an easy walk to the stadium. Of course, my brother and I were automatically challenged to a two on two game of football in the large front yard of the Pasadena House. The two sons of our dad’s friend looked at us as easy push overs in sports and especially, football. They were about the same size and very talkative. So, the game was on… The grass yard was large and with a few passes, I could hit my brother running my plays beyond the arms of the other kids. My brother was also fast and could cut back and forth to get free for the reception. Since the rules prevented the direct run from the hike, we devised a play where I got the ball and my brother ran sideways into the backfield. I then passed him a short pass and took off down field. He threw a long pass and I caught it on the run for a score. By this time, those other brothers looked defeated and less cocky about their “superiority” in football. The visit, plus lunch and dinner provided a different look at attending those Rose Bowl games. We by passed all of the fleeing traffic after the game. Yikes... Jnaki The neat thing was, we all walked to the Rose Bowl and we did not have to fight the traffic for parking spaces. 90K folks all heading for their parked cars… wow! The after game activities are usually jammed with everyone leaving the large Rose Bowl and heading home. We just walked back to the Pasadena House and had a nice dinner. We even threw in some jabs about playing football for Long Beach Poly H.S. and the Pasadena teens were somewhat awed, since we beat them by three touchdowns...Ha! YRMV NOTE: For old antique wares and car parts, the backyard garages were cleaned out and they were all lined up in rows for the wandering buyers. It is a big hit with “Hollywood types” if that is your thing. Over the years, the car parts started fading out as the commercial antique “stuff” dealers began to flood the area. Now, it is about 50-50, so the backyard garage antique stuff is not the main emphasis. Most of those old hot rod parts folks moved to the monthly show/sales at the Long Beach Veteran's Stadium parking lot for the parts sales. Lucky for us being closer to home. The same company that put on the plentiful car shows in Long Beach/Los Angeles areas, was the sponsor of the Rose Bowl Antique Shows. But, the hot rod parts portion is still going on in Long Beach. The next show/sale is in August 2025.
