Pt. Mugu at the big curve on PCH heading to Oxnard/Ventura.

    Hello,

The coastal drive through this area from Oxnard and the Pt. Mugu down through Leo Carrillo State Beach South to Malibu is one of the nicest cruises that should be on anyone's itinerary while in the LA area. We have been down that highway a zillion times since 1960 and it never gets old... Even in the early mornings, there are always waves crashing during the separate times of the year. Some break during the summers only and other beaches break during the rest of the year.

But, the coastal drive from Santa Monica to Pt. Mugu is one of the best in So Cal, it never gets old. We have driven it many times up the coast from the Santa Monica Pier area, through Malibu North. That was the destination during the summer swell months. The other times of the year, there are more surf spots that break. The driving lanes are the normal width, but seem rather tight and only the double yellow lines separate you from the oncoming traffic. Late night drives are not recommended, due to the headlights glare and the curving roads into a blind spot.

The next time anyone is here in So Cal, if you start at Pt. Mugu North of LA on the coastline, you can drive all along the coast for 90% of the time through the South Orange County line, just before Camp Pendleton. Growing up in this area was pretty nice as it is one of the best drives in a crowded civilization.

If you have ever watched The Chainsmokers video of the ever popular "Closer" song, you were within a minute or two of this spectacular huge rock and visitor parking lot. On the north side of the rock is a surf spot that most folks just drive by without much thought. That video shows a lot of the coastline from Point Mugu in the north all the way down to the Latigo Canyon coastline area. The inland portions of the film are part of this vast wilderness just a few minutes drive into the valleys.

Now I realize there are a 100 different versions of "Closer." Here is the right one that shows the outstanding Los Angeles County coastline footage, including beach shots. It fits right in with the photo of big giant rock with the Cobra in the beachside pull out area of the coastal road.

    "We ain't ever getting older
No, we ain't ever getting older..."

    Chainsmokers “Closer”

Take your time as you drive up or down the coastline. The scenery is the typical So Cal coastal and mountains, just about anywhere. But it is very nice on a sunny day cruise along the coastal waters.

The beauty of this part of the coastline is shown in the aerial footage and the beach scenes. A good showing of the So Cal coastline for everyone. Definitely, a worthwhile area for cruising in your hot rod anytime of the year. The roads, surf, and valleys, it is hard to keep your eye on the road when driving on this Highway 1 up or down this part of the coastline.

I am sure that you have seen or heard this song...It is one of the best of the whole line of cool songs by The Chainsmokers. But it is the driving image of the coastline that is so striking...ok, so is the girl in the video.

    Note:
In recent times, a damaging fire blasted this area and some of the homes have been destroyed to bare ground. So, the road was closed for quite some time to fight the fires and resulting damages. Now, a single lane is open both ways, but is randomly closed due to repair and construction damages. So, be prepared if you happen to be in the area. YRMV
