    Hello,

We knew about the Oceanside Pier as it was located just a few miles South from San Onofre. It was past the huge Marine base on the highway leading to San Diego. Oceanside Pier has gone through many changes over time. But the one thing it has going for it is that the roadway runs along the sand and it is one of the closest streets along the water for any city on the beach.

We have been to Oceanside plenty of times during our surfing days. The harbor has great waves, the pier also has good waves. We liked the Huntington Beach Pier closer to our house, and enjoyed surfing there. But, the waves at the Oceanside pier were for us, a great place to surf back then. The guy who was known as L.J. Richards ruled the beach/waves as he was a stylish surfer and was the best surfer in the water.

Many years later, My wife and I like the Oceanside Harbor area. So, we took a drive down the coastline like the old days. When we got to the Oceanside Harbor, we went to several unused sections of the harbor for different views of the waterfront location.

Some of the nice restaurants have closed due to the pandemic and it makes the area like a ghost town. But, as we drove down the rest of the ocean front roadway to the pier, it made the whole place come alive again. There is something to be said about crashing waves and the interaction between people and nature…
upload_2025-9-10_4-37-19.png waterside, beach sand side roadway... Very close to the ocean one way street is one of the most fun drives in the area. Yes, it is a little shaky during large wave days and definitely not a storm day drive. YRMV

Oceanside is well known for the Camp Pendleton massive complex sitting between Los Angeles and the San Diego region. The main entrance being across the freeway from the public Oceanside Harbor facilities. 20 plus miles of raw coastline that have been private since the early days.

Some places are still not for public uses, although more areas are allowing access with permission of the Provost Marshall’s office. It still is one of the largest military training facilities in the USA. If you are military and have credentials, it is possible to get on the base and explore.

But, the Oceanside city offers a long stretch of beach that changes with the currents and storm swells coming from all directions. Starting with the harbor in the North, then all the way past the pier to the end of the road. If one is on the main road on top of the cliffside, the attraction is the old, original “Top Gun” house as it was featured in the movie.

The Lock City Motor Corporation started as the Eames Motor Corporation a 22 – 24 W. Main Street in Lockport NY in 1920. A few years later, the name changed to Lock City. The dealership was in business until 1931. Many people may remember this building as Mecorney’s Decorating Center, owned and operated by Clint and Joann Starke. It is now home to several small businesses.
Nelson’s Motors was opened by Kenneth Nelson, Sr. in 1934 at 51-55 Locust Street and later moved to 59 Park Avenue, as shown in this c1940s photo. In its later years it was located at 237 Park Avenue at Bristol. The dealership closed in 1970.

President William McKinley spent the morning and early afternoon of September 6, 1901 in Niagara Falls. Here are a few photos from his visit. Later that day, McKinley was shot by an anarchist, Leon Czolgosz, in the Temple of Music at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo. He died eight days later.
