For an Austin Seven nut like me this last page has woken me up again, Great stuff from the NPL with the artwork for the Bantams, the Alex Tremulis sketches are just awesome (to coin an American phrase). Apart from the girl next door who is gorgeous the best one just has to be 'moon discs' which is a 1920s BMW Dixi Limousine. The disc wheel covers were popular options when these cars were new. Thanks to jimi'shemi291, gyronaut, roakillontheweb and of course Johnny Gee.

 

I would love to know what's going on here?

Looks like KOA doing their annual public custom "demo" at Wintersun.

 

The first shot is of a scrap drive during WWII in Pittsburgh and the second shot is probably less than half of the total shot. The yard is huge I had to zoom in that much so you could even get the details to see what it was. Probably from the 20s

I wish this pic could talk! And that it had been framed a tad better.
Still, there seem to be some hints who, when and where it was
taken, eh? THANKS, JalopyJunkie!

Reminds of my uncle's '47. He was a wild one! (My dad had sworn
off bikes before the war when a best friend had, in his words, "tried
to climb a telephone pole" with a cycle.) After the Indian, my uncle
had at least two more Harleys I can remember. Riding on the back
of those noisy 'chines was a big deal for a young boy!

 

I'm speculating a bit, but I'd bet five bucks this is a publicity stunt from during
the Korean War to promote scrap drives. Scrap campaigns during WWII had
been one of the effective ways leaders elicited public support and involve-
ment in the war effort. Anyway, NOTHING authorities did could ever make
the Korea "Police Action" popular with even a fraction of the American pop-
ulace; I think people had gotten war weary, and they didn't want another war
so SOON after WWII!




If you look at the discussion we had back on Page 454 RE the LIFE
photo below, I think there's a strong connection.
