Vintage shots from days gone by!

X2 Artfrombama, I'm a pig just like any other guy but somethings are uncalled for! And now it mentioned again just above. Geez!

 

These train pic got me wanting to dig up these O.Winston Link photographs .

 

Now that, is a cool pic!I guess they had a tractor race or something. It also has 999 on it, and that's either Ol' Barney Oldfield, or my cousin, Wilbur Rakestraw, who used the triple 9 in his Nascar days in the late 50's

 

Once the world's fastest train the 1891 Empire State Express 999 made 999 synonymous with speed and I'm sure there were many more.

 

So the cutie on the Harley, she must work for the state cause her bike and gloves say DOT, maybe some sorta road innspector??????

 

K, somebody school me. what's up with that grille? Is it not a '34 Ford? Shit, nevermind, just saw Hudson on the door. DOH! But still, what a beautiful grill!

This is "Dot" Robinson the founder of Motor Maids, Inc., a women's motorcycle group around 1940. The group still exists.

 

I think this car was also used as a stunt vehicle on the old Candid Camera show. They'd have a lady pull into a service station on three wheels and ask the mechanic to check out a funny noise her car was making.

....If you have a digital camera you can 'take a pic' of the pic,
just watch out for reflections and try to keep your shots parallel to the plain of the photos.



Example:
A lot of times I will lay the pic flat in a sunny window (on the studio couch for example) and
aim the camera straight down on it being careful to line up one edge of the pic (usually a 'long'
edge) with the edge of the cameras view screen.
This helps insure that you will end up with a more or less straight pic once you have finished
cropping and editing the pic as you ready it for the hamb..

Remember:
Let the camera do the work,
-don't try and fill the 'screen' with the image as 2 things will generally occur:

1st, the corners of the image will curve off due to the camera lens's curvature so by backing
out a bit the subject image will not be noticeably contorted by the curvature of the lens.

2nd, if you go to close in you are more likely to end up with a blurry image as some cameras
are not so good at close ups. By backing out a bit, the image is sure to remain crisp.

Next,
I cropped the image using irfanview software (irfanview is a Great! free download).

After cropping the image (which took about 10 seconds) I set the width (adjusted resolution) to
800 wide (about 5 seconds) so that the image wouldn't be toooo big on the HAMB.

I also converted the images to grey scale (took less than 5 seconds) to get rid of the yellowness of the original paper/pic.
(Irfanview does all that and more)

Lastly, I saved the image while being careful to rename it to something relevant to the image.
(Never save the image without renaming it as you will overwrite and loose the originals nice
high resolution forever!).


Here's the end result which probably took less than a minute from shooting the pic to cropping and adjusting size and color:





You can achieve much the same results with windows (built in) image and fax viewer but I
prefer irfanview due to it's faaaaaaar superior image handily abilities.

This technique works in a pinch and your shots can turn out quite well especially if you are
careful in aligning the image to the camera screens edge, (it all has to start out straight and
clear to end up presentable on the forums)...

Once you have done this a few times it becomes second nature and the amount of 'editing'
time drops to mere seconds per image.


...........So, all you fellas that can't post cuz you don't have a scanner,
You dont have anymore excuses.


One last thing, I use my cheapy camera as a portable scanner when I am on the road or at a buddies
house and he has a pic or article that I want.
-(I have taken thousands of pics of documents, auction lists/posters, bills of sale, neat pics and
interesting articles using my portable 'scanner').

Well, from what I read at the time, Elvis kinda really dug Ann-Margret Olsen. And she sorta liked him, too. Quaint, ain't it?

Oh, and "Viva Las Vegas" was the 11th best draw at the boxoffice for 1964.

at 42, August 16, 1977. Though I was 27 at the time, I
was in disbelief for a couple of weeks. I felt as if I'd lost
a brother.

 

On photographing pictures, and other documents, I use a piece of masking or adhesive tape to cover the flash, that takes 99% or the surface reflection away and still gives you good enough litging to get the pic. Push comes to shove and no tape around, cover most of the flash with your finger.

 

While we're on the Elvis topic, I absolutley think he was the best singer of any genre, of the 20th century...make that all time. I've been a fan since I was seven when I heard King Creole for the first time on a cd. In fact, back this spring, I had to write a biography for any one, so I wrote 36 pages on him just until 1956. He died on my birthday and was born on my parents anniversary! I always thought that was cool!
