U.S. Army Air Corps Boeing P-26 "pursuits." Either a remote encampment/excercise or they diverted into this rural airfield because of bad weather enroute? Interesting.

Yet another Aeronca! The Beech Staggerwing (D17) is nice but for us poor fellas the "airknocker" is one cool ship.

I think I count 12 Steam Engines with fully loaded coal cars!

That would be well over 1,000,000 pounds on that bridge, - you can almost? see it sagging.

One of my all time 'Super Heros' has got to be Gene Winfield....


We all know him for his beautiful full on customs and fantastic paint/color
combinations but not every one knows that Gene "Windy" Winfield
was a hot rod racer that never seemed to strap on a helmet







One of Gene's first full on show stopping cars was this '56 Mercury called the "Jade Idol"
...Unfortunately It was destroyed on it's way to a show





The 'Solar Scene' came along in '63, it's easy to see what the original was formed
from with just one glance at the roof line.



Here's Gene At work for AMT in the mid 60's.
Note the sketch in the back ground...


While working for AMT in Pheonix, Winfield built the 'Reactor'.
The car garnered so much interest that it was taken to Hollywood 'to show' to the
TV and Movie studios, And with a calling card like the 'Reactor', Winfield easily
found his way onto the movie lots at which point he would offer the car
for use in any possible up-and-coming future TV shows.





The car was well received as many of the big name TV stars had their picture
taken with it, or even better yet, got to take it for a quick cruise around town.

Eventually all the attention led to cameo TV spots on shows like Batman
while people like William Shatner (Star Trek) paroozed it's ultra-fine body lines.










It wasn't long before Hollywood was calling on Winfield to build cars
specifically for Network TV shows.....
ABC TV studios went as far as writing an entire episode around the car....

-On January 19th 1967, "Bewitched" aired "The Super Car." with a plot that
saw mom-in-law Endora 'Zap' a futuristic car out of nowhere in
order to garner her son-in-laws affection...
....But you can bet that 'Darren' got into a lot of trouble with it.

Another Winfield show stopper was the "Strip Star".
It was based on a combination of speed and beauty with a hand-formed aluminum
body propelled by a thundering 427 Ford engine.






And behind the scenes Detroit was keeping a watchful eye on the up and coming
Hollywood custom crowd.
....Guys like Winfield, Barris, Jeffries, Starbird, and even the Alexander Brothers
would all be asked to add their custom touches to factory cars at one point or another.
And it was During this time that Ford came up with the "Ford Custom Car Caravan"
which was little more than a traveling show car exhibit.
Ford had the good sense to offer up brand spanking new cars to 'Hollywoods' favorite
customizers and guys like Winfield didn't let them down. For his part Gene customized
a brand new Falcon, an LTD, and an Econoline as well as a Comet convertible for
the Mercury division.






Over and above all the wild futuristic customs Gene was keeping busy with other projects...
..Few people know that Gene built the full-sized prop of the "Star Trek" Galileo 7
Shuttlecraft. -Matt Jeffries worked out the original sketches but AMT thought
that this was a bit beyond their capabilities so Winfield redesigned it and
the rest is history...







(Unfortunately, the USS Galileo led a hard life after the original Star Trek series
ended, but that's another story).




...With so much recognition and with a new Hollywood clientele, Winfield opened
up his on shop not at all too far from the studio action...






Gene is still hard at it today and can often be found out in the community
showing 'up and comers' how it's done.
