One my hobbys is collecting old post cards from my home town. I got one recently of our small hospital with a southern style custom out front.

The First Thanksgiving being approximately 1621 - 1623, it does seem pretty unlikely that the colonists were yet growing EITHER potatoes or tomatoes as foodstuffs. The Spanish had "discovered" the potato and tomato in the region of Peru during their conquests. They introduced potatoes to Europe in the latter 1500s, and it's possible Columbus may have taken tomatoes -- cultivated by Meso-Americans since before Christ -- back there about the same time.

But in the British Empire, both were slow to gain farmers' favor, in that both are members of the family Solanaceae (aka Nightshades) and were, therefore, thought by many to be poison :( (I surely would NOT eat the foliage!:p). It seems unlikely that either crop got much agricultural traction in the colonies until about the 1700s.

But speaking of crops cultivated by American Indian tribes, the "Three Sisters" -- corn, beans and squash -- might well have made their way to the table at the first Thanksgiving, IMO.

thanks Moefuzz, and the rest,, you've done a lot of work, great stuff.
here is a short clip of SF before the earthquake of 1906, it is purportedly showing Market street from the front of a cable car. You can see the new cars and horse carriages side by side. A bit of nostalgic vintageness .. sry about the advertisements, the film is 12 min.
