I think someone was smoking something when they designed this thing,it looks like it would be a big pain in the butt to get in and out of it.

    Great matchbooks Moe;)

Anyway, since it is Elvis' birthday, and you can kinda figure out by my screen name what I'm getting at....I'll show ya'll a couple pictures of one of my favorite cars he had. In June of 56', he and his girl flew to Texas to pick up a new Eldorado Biaritz in white, which was around $10,000, while a new Thunderbird from that year cost around $3,100. Anyway. The first pic is in the spring of 1957 after he purchased Graceland and was the car still white.

And the next one was a picture for his fan club, around May or June of 57', he had the car customized by the same guy that painted his early Caddy's pink.

(what people don't know, is that he had two pink Caddys early on, he bought a 54 four-door series 62 in March of 55, He had it painted rose pink with a white top. Then in July of 55', a brake rotor caught fire and burned it to the ground in Oklahoma. Shortly after, Elvis bought a brand new 55' Series 62 sedan and had it painted pink, but this time with a black top. Something happened along the way the fall, I can't remember off the top of my head, and he had it repainted again, this time with a white-top to match his first one. He had the interior mildly customized, then by late 1955, he had a few cars, so he gave this one to his mother Gladys, he didn't just outright buy her one like everyone says)

So back to the 56 Eldo, he took it to the same guy who painted his Pink sedans, he squashed a hand-full of grapes on the fender, and said that was the color he wanted. He had white tuck-n-roll put in with purple piping trim and purple carpets with a guitar shaped visor on each side.

Needless to say, it was (in my opinion) a pretty awesome mild custom. Not even a year after making it cool, in December of 57', the car kept having mechanical problems by not starting and battery wouldn't charge properly, so he traded it in two days before Christmas. A lady bought it shortly after for almost 1/4 of the original price, and moved to Alabama with her husband where it sat outside in a lean-to for almost 20 years. When she died, another couple from here in Ga bought it for less than a $1000 in 1976, and was going to restore it to show Elvis, but he died before the car could get finished. The restored car is now donated to the Graceland car museum. As far as I know, the only thing that the last couple put on that wasn't there before was lake pipes, which I guess doesn't look too bad...

Well, hope you enjoyed my little history lesson on my favorite Elvis car:)

  10. I would think many of the employees went to fight in the war, leaving many businesses with a very limited workforce.

  11. Here's some pics from The Yukon Territory, during the time that the Alaska Highway was being built. Oh and that one they are fishing out of the river, was full of beer for the workers, according to the notes accompanying the pics!

It appears you have a very interesting faux stereo effect going on here. Wow. Do you know any more about how it is done or where I can find out more about it? Gary

It's a GIF image which is a combination of 2 or more images shown at timed intervals.
And I think you are correct in that it is an original stereoview card with both images showing.
It's easy to make your own GIF animations using simple pic editing programs like Irfanview
    http://www.irfanview.com/

btw, if you do any amount of viewing images and/or want to go to the next level, Irfanview is the choice for advanced pic handling. (and it's free)

  15. One little nit picking point about the car that burnt down in Okla. Cadillac of that year didn't have brake rotors.

  16. Our 56 wagon, circa 1961/2. Ran across this when going through my recently-passed dad's pictures. Wouldn't I love to have this today...almost as much as I would love to have him back.

Thanx for the link... and dang it all, yet another distraction to investigate! I'd also guess that the stereo pairs are just superimposed and then blinked at intervals. Very cool, ifn true. You might even be able to color them red / blue and perhaps get an additional visual treat if also viewed with some old colored stereo glasses. Or not. I think it would be great for newer images in full color, too. Very interesting, as Artie Shaw might say. Gary

They made a broadway musical out of that session.
Just saw it at Shea's Buffalo.

Sure, a bit embelished, but a great show.
Kind of like, "If I was only there when it happened........."
