    Description

Houlton Army Air Base was established in 1941 because of its proximity to Canada. Prior to the United States entry into the war, the United States "lent" military equipment to Great Britain to enable it to continue the war against Nazi Germany. Planes were flown to Houlton Army Air Base but U.S. military pilots could not fly the planes directly into Canada, a British ally, because that would violate the official U.S. position of neutrality in the war between Great Britain and Germany. In this picture, Arnold Peabody, a Houlton area farmer is towing an SBC-3 Helldiver across the border to Canada.

Here is a 1920 photograph of Grace Valentine and a Packard Twin Six Roadster. Her and the car were features in a film series called The Scarlet Runner, a story about a "super car." The story still exists on paper but there is no known film copies to exist

If it was 1957 and you were 7, as I was, Fizzies were the schizniks of the day! ;)
Heck, soda pop was scarce around our house. So if we could just talk dad &
mom into buying a box of Fizzies, we were a cold glass of water away from
the next best thing to pop! :p (Unlike Kool Aid, Fizzes were carbonated! Yowza.)
ANYBODY happen remember about how much Fizzies COST???

Funny, when you're a kid, and driving yourself
to school was a far, far-off dream:eek:, impressing
your friends could be a matter of toting a snazzy
lunch box featuring a popular TV series. Here
are just a few, thanks to FoundinMom'sBasement.

A series of 12 2-reel episodes, each a separate and unrelated story, relating the adventures of Christopher Race and his high-powered automobile, The Scarlet Runner. Each episode has a different cast, except for the continuing role of Earle Williams. Episode titles are: #1: The Car and His Majesty; #2: The Nurenberg Watch; #3: The Masked Ball; #4: The Hidden Prince; #5: The Jacobean House; #6: The Mysterious Motor Car; #7: The Red Whiskered Man; #8: The Glove and the Ring; #9: The Gold Cigarette Case; #10: The Lost Girl; #11: The Missing Chapter; #12: The Car and the Girl.

I haven't heard about this one.
    Too bad it is "lost".

  26. Oh yeah I sure remember em! They couldn't have been too much $$ cuz we had 'em a lot, probably 29cents or so. But a lot of us "tough kids" would instead open a nickel packet of UNSWEETENED Kool-Aid then take & pour a bit of it into the mouth - WOW! Methinks that had more kick than dry Fizzies!

Then in one of the "double-dog-dare-ya" moments, a coupla kids tried snorting the KoolAid powder - as I recollect, they only did it ONCE, which was twice too many times for me.

I don't know which was more "fun" though, doing it or watching the kids that did!

    Cheap thrills for sure.

Thanks for getting the Swedish pics up and running. Great street scenes, some of the best I've seen. Thanks to all the contributers. I check this thread daily, always something interesting to see.

For me, I would like people to stick to old photographs, Vintage pics is what it is about. Pics from old mags and stills from films are a bit different, and frankly not of the same quality of well taken old photo's, and dilute the original premise of the thread.

    Love this thread.

    UNUSUAL INTEREST IN VITAGRAPH'S
    "THE SCARLET RUNNER"
Motor Romance Series with Earle Williams in the Role of a
    Wealthy Racing Car Owner
Vnusual interest centers in the coming
Vitagraph serial picture, " The Scarlet
Runner." Albert E. Smith, president of
the company, believes that exhibitors will
appreciate the unusual points of the production.
    Mr. Smith states that, unlike
most serials, each episode of " T h e Scarlet
Runner '* tells its own story and the exhibitors'
patrons, missing one or two installments,
will not lose interest in the
    series as a whole.
    " T h e Searltt Runner" has been termed
    Vitagraph's Mile a-Minute Motor Serb s.
The producers believe it to be one of the
most exceptional pictures ever released by
Vitagraph, ranking with *' The Goddess,"
    " God's Country and the Woman," '• A
Million Bid," " The Christian," and " TV.e
    Battle Cry of Peace."
When it was first decided that Earle
Williams should have the honor of appearing
in a weekly release, the executives of
the Vitagraph Company read a great many
    books before deciding upon
    M The Scarlet
    Runner," written by C. N. and A. M.
    Williamson.
William P. S. Earle. who has recently
won his spurs as a Vitagraph director,
has contribute*' to " The Scarlet Runner,"
series the first and fifth episodes. " The
Car and His Majesty," and " The Jacobean
House." All of the other ten episodes are
directed by Wally Van, whose painstaking
work is evident in the range of beautiful
locations secured that carry out the English
    atmosphere of the story.
The story of " The Scarlet Runner," presents
an unusual role for the star, Earle
Williams, who remains impervious to the
charms of women until the final two
chapters of this series of motor mysteries.
The love interest throughout tee* twelve
stories is said to be strongly maintained,
the stories centering around ten beautiful
women, each lady having an affair of the
heart. Earle Williams as Christopher Race.
owner of the speedy '* Scarlet Runner,"
succeeds in portraying the part of Cupid's
helper to the satisfaction of everybody.
As the series approaches its close, the
genial Mr. Race meets the one girl in a
million, portrayed by Edith Storey and
the series literally winds up with a bang
when Dorothy Herbert (Edith Storey t,
deliberately wrecks the car she is driving
in order that Christopher Race (Earle
    Williams) may win.
Exhibitors are asked by the producers
to bear in mind that " The Scarlet
Runner" does not depend upon blood and
thunder situations for sustaining the interest
of their patrons, but it is the type of
picture that will keep them coming week
    after week.
The first release of " The Scarlet
Runner" will be made on Sept. 18. It
is entitled " The Car and His Majesty."
It is followed a week later by " The Nuremburg
Watch," and ten other complete twopart

    stories released weekly through
