  10. Do you notice if this is more of a problem on pages with pictures that are 2000 or 3000 pixels wide, or maybe pages that have a handful of the animated GIF images that look like jerky old-time movies? Some of these files are HUGE and it's no wonder that it sometimes takes longer than normal for a page to load. :(

Yeah, exactly, what ClayMart said, and it is really bad if you dont have broadband, cant imagine what a dial-up connection would be like,,
does anyone even have dial-up anymore?

Well, I don't have money, so I'm still stuck with dial-up. I'm pretty much out of the loop now, since I don't have a half-hour for each page to load. I love Dog's thread, but I don't think he envisioned it as a place for people to load mega-pixel photos.

And, anyway, didn't Ryan Cochran just address such issues about 3-4 days ago? He said (if I understood correctly) to compress files and, for larger pix, tuck them into a LINK, don't have them load automatically to the page a hand.

All I'm saying is that those huge files consume band width. Ryan and the mods have condoned the thread, but site maintenance and memory cost money.

I'm going to play Post Police
You have posted a couple of pictures that are "New Photos" of old vehicles.
This thread is supposed to be "Old Photos" from before 1970 something
Just thought I would bring it to your attention

  23. I'm not trying to bust anybody's chops here, but I do find this annoying. Especially when you have to scroll the screen from side to side to read it and see the whole picture. But I also realize that not everyone is aware of the details of the images that they post online. So here's a little comparison of what we're looking at.

To get information about image and file sizes in Windows, right-click over an image and then left-click on "Properties".

    Image size 1301x1797 pixels
    File size 265,113 KB

    Image size 1280x831 pixels
    File size 459,548 KB

    Image size 751x480 pixels
    File size 116,316 KB

    Image size 500x298 pixels
    File size 574,277 KB

    Image size 500x370 pixels
    File size 983,031 KB

The GIF image in 42475 is almost 10 time as large as the still image in 42488, even though it takes up less actual space onscreen!

When you're prepping still images to post here, consider making them no wider than about 800 pixels. When you save them as JPEGs you should have the option to compress them to reduce the file size. Compress them too much and the quality can suffer. But most images for web display can be compressed slightly, still look good, and an 800x600 pixel JPEG file can end up considerably smaller.

If you've got a whiz-bang fiber optic internet connection, well good for you. But not everybody else has that option or can afford that luxury. ;)
