Hey, AutomaticSlim, I think that's a good point, that the trading-stamp programs seemed mainly
targeted at women;), though a few items for the kids were in the catalogues. (In truth, I eventually
wised up and started dampening the stamps with a cloth, saving the ol' taste buds! :p LOL) Since
we touched on the subject, I think I read that S&H Green Stamps went all the way back to the 1890s (!).

BUT, it seems certain that "coupons" predated lick&stick trading stamps by as much as a decade!
This coupon from 1888 for a FREE Coke is thanks to Wikipedia. The Coca-Cola logo art is, of course,
copyrighted, though the name is ubiquitous. In 1888, I'm thinking the original Coca-Cola recipe would
have still included a trace of cocaine. But I do believe that the company was already beginning to
deliberately steer their drink toward popular soda fountains and away from the image of a "tonic" by
this time. We have Coke historians on the HAMB, so I welcome corrections! :) Just a fun early coupon,
IMO. Sorry it's a bit wide.

i agree with you mike. my grandparents on my moms side raised 3 girls and lost a baby boy because there was no money.and they were hard working southern folks, honest as the day is long. and they didnt always look thier best.my grandfather turn pro gambler and made enough to feed clothe and give the family a roof over their head.and poker games were raid alot back in those days.but they made it thru it. that pic is just a small look into what people had to deal with. you can see it in the eyes.after awhile you dont really care what you look like. you care about eating and if the kids can eat.those comments are kinda slap in those peoples face.even tho they were meant in humor it still hurts to see people run down or made fun of because they have all but given up.whats bad is itis going to happen again.in the near future.

Hope these fit in here. Something quaint from Old England.

Friend at work found an old book and gave it to me. It's the Autocar magazine's guide for the L Driver.

First printed in 1937, this one's from '54.

I scanned the images from it because I thought they were cool.

    Mart.

  14. Mike, it was my post that made the Deliverance reference. I wholeheartedly apologize - it was very thoughtless on my part. My original post has been deleted.

  15. Mike and Tennessee.... both of you, i feel your pain, i know the way to see the 'funny' stuff by glorifying things that happened before us..dunno how ole you are but talkin' for myself i sometimes clothed my face in smiles it wasn't worth a smile, my great granny(born 1898) survived both world wars and waved her li'l hand for the german Kaiser, and after loosin' her husband in '47 (M.I.A.) she was even able to smile when i (in 1970's) played with my childhood friends 'shoot the enemy up in the cherrytree'.. i always admire her! and for having no new pics by now i'd like to post grandma (her daughter), for she was playing the small clubs even for a piece of bread, butter or whatelse to bring my own mom through cold winters or to buy a doll or whatever to make mom smile! and later mom has born .. me ('69). and i'm very proud to be here! promise to always take twin a thought before replying something i don't understand, our times still are not so bad..10 minutes ago i bolted on my new antenna first after paint job is done! great guys all of you! back to topic! (hope again, my english works and let you get me the right way)

    Regards, Carsten

TennesseeCouchPotato gets a big thumbs up for being a real man. He admitted he made a flippant
remark in fun. I'll admit, I was tempted to do the same thing, in fact. Those of us who come from
hard-scrabble roots understand the value of being able to "poke fun" at ourselves, our families and
even our ancestors. Thank you, Tennessee. I'm gonna put in a friend request, man.

You guys both said -- in a few terse words -- a lot of wisdom. My dad lost every tooth in his head
and went to work every day he was actually sick, so that his four kids would have a chance at a
better life than he'd had growing up in the depression and going to war for his country. For those
lucky enough to have big TVs on their walls and garages to work on their cars in when weather sucks
outside (and when you must have the daily to get to work the next day), just look back though Dog's
thread, and you'll see working-class people in real-world situations. Men and women were self-reliant
not long ago. Our resident tech expert, Moe (who volunteers advice and doesn't ask for a big pat on
the back -- though I think he deserves one, just for taking in other people's cast-off animals), remem-
bers growing up and feeling lucky to get two channels on TV. Hell, young people today get bored
with ... God knows how many channels. I sincerely pray that that last dozen words in Outlaw's post
don't come to pass, but I'm worried. Sorry for my ramblings.

So, THANKS to the guys I mentioned and to ALL those who keep the real SOUL in Dog's thread. -- Jim

  19. So are plates in Iowa issued for life, or were they the first in line, or what's the story?

Even though she may not have been a "pin-up" girl, I've always thought Doris Day had a nice rack.

I went to East Elementary in the 1960’s in Logan. I loved cruising thru town to the Shake Shop with my older brother. I lived on a small farm on Bear Run Rd. Their isn’t a day that go’s by I don’t think of fond memories living in Logan.
