Wow, EhDubya! AWESOME photo! I've never even seen this one before. Was there any more background
info with it? Though I don't see anything newer than '38, it doesn't indicate when the pic was actually
snapped. What's the Source of the photo, and what was this "new process" Bethlehem was using to recycle

Awesome site there EhDubya! That answered most all my wonders. INTERESTING that BURNING was still part of the plan, but instead of breaking down the cars with a torch they were now smashing them with a steel weight (no hydraulic crusher yet) and making them bite-size with a big-ass shear. Interesting piece of history, circa 1952.

BTW, I still can't ID every car/truck on that bottom row. Is the car at left a Pierce-Arrow? Terraplane?

Yeah, exit 13 is the exit for Elizabeth, but the exit itself could well be located in Linden. Towns and cities are located very close together in North Jersey. I live here, and it's still hard for me to figure out what town I'm in at any given moment. Good to see some pics of the east coast.

There used to be a saying that "you could smell New Jersey before you could see it," referring to the area in the bottom photo of the turnpike scenes. They've cleaned all of that up, I'm happy to say. But it is true that here in Jersey, the town you live in is defined by what exit of the turnpike you use to get to it.

I have to disagree. I remember that rocket outside the third turn at Daytona in 1960 or 61. It's also in the film of Lee Petty's wreck, I believe.

Here's another shot.... and some film from the race - 1961 Daytona 500

    Race results with car numbers...

Also, I'm not sure how they would have 1961 cars in a movie released in 1960...

Accident scene from the Daytona 500 NASCAR stock car race.
    Location: Daytona Beach, FL, US
    Date taken: 1961

YES! It doesn't outright hurt to inhale "air" in August anymore.

Jimi, I thinks it's a 33 Plymouth on the left, the rear facing sedan next to it I have no idea and the next looks like a 35 Graham.
