You are probably right about the role of the World's Fair. But I'm reminded that designers were promoting "teardrop" shaped vehicles even before 1930. Martin and Lewis are two names that pop into my head -- no, not Dean and Jerry! The cars created by Martin (the same of Martin aircraft fame) and Carl Lewis (Airomobile) come to mind. Then there was Fuller's Dymaxion. Streamlining, it seems, was inevitable.

From the December 19, 1946, issue of SCIENCE ILLUSTRATED,
the still-early concept for the Tucker Torpedo (as it had been nick-
named, not officially christened) still included moving front fenders.
What a production headache that would have been. Also a Tatra-
like rear roof fin. George Lawson had dutifully included a number
of features Preston Tucker had dreamed of including in this car.
By the time this magazine item appeared, Alex Tremulis was also
onboard and beginning to bring the goose down to a more practical
earthbound form. Still, it's very interesting to see how Lawson had
labored to render Tucker's original vision. Preston is shown below
in a publicity still, stamped February 12, 1946, with a Lawson ren-
dering. There is a lot more info, plus photos and drawings of how
the Tucker 48 gradually developed under Lawson, Tremulis and a
number of other Tucker-employed designers at KUSTOMRAMA.
Again, HAMBer TuckerFan is ALWAYS looking for previously
unpublished material on Tucker and his fab, ill-fated sedan,
SO, please scratch around in your collections!

That page with the tape from Science Illustrated is the actual page that Alex Tremulis saved and drew upon to start refining the Tucker '48's final shape.

One thing for sure, Alex Tremulis didn't waste any time to finalize the design. Here's a few of his concepts spanning from just January to February of 1947:

And then, drawn on February 28, 1947, his renderings hit the final nail on the head. By that time, the sheet metal panels for the "Tin Goose" prototype were already being hammered out, the rendering was commissioned for and used in full-page ads across the country, and the rest, as they say, is history...
