Every chance I get which isn't nearly enough these days! A good fire, a few close friends and a cooler full of cold brews on a cool Summer or Autumn night......... it doesn't get much better than that.

  9. nope, Doc, it's a DKW F1, built between 1929 and '31, first front wheel drive in mass production over here. worked for a restoration comp. for long years on these cars, founder of DKW was Jörn Skafte Rasmussen, a danish guy. with regards to all of my danish friends and neighbours...

btw, DKW was the WORLD motorbikes sales leader in twenny-eight!!! i visited the former plant in i think '95, it is nealy unmolested since the wall broke down. was a time trip!

YellerSpirit, THANKS for the thorough but tight summation of how the Old Man's demise went down, and subsequent efforts and ideas for commemorating him appropriately! Just excellent.

Sites such as this are not ONLY state treasures reflecting the heritage and character of citizenry, they are national treasures, as well. As WONDERFUL as the various proposals were/are, I say, IF they can recreate the Statue of Liberty (which is essentially what Lee I. did), then it can be done for the "Old Man" too! My 2 cents here.

Instead of recreating/reproducing it out of heavy materials, as before when they patched it up, how about a framework, much like the Statue of Liberty? If the rock behind such a structure is solid, a structure like that would NOT be a heavy downward "lever" like the doctored-up feature was before.

I suppose I dream:eek:, but such a strategy IS within the realm of possibility -- at least after this recession is over and enough people are back to decent-paying jobs where they can contribute to such a cause.

I have read a lot about The "Old Man" and all the effort the state put in to keep him up there there was even steel cable netting over him to help support him,What they didn't know at the time was weather over the centuries had created a cave behind the outcropping,Water from rain and melting snow had been undermining the softer rock behind the face this didn't show up until after his fall.I don't think it's practical to rebuild him but putting a small museum at the right road side location and some form of visible marker where he stood would be best let folks see all the history about him and be able to pin point where he was through the telescopes.

  18. The road into Noel is a little wider (but not much!) and still hugs the bluff wall. Cool on a bike, a little unnerving in a car when a dump truck is coming the other way!

Who is the girl sitting on the hood of the Buick? I have a similar photo of my wife on the same model Buick so I photoshopped them to be sitting together
