Funny, I had just zeroed in on Bethel VT when TWIN6 posted the town.

The photo is of the Bascom Hotel looking S/SE on Highway 12 in Bethel, Vermont. The address would be 270 Main Street in Bethel. It is a parking lot now. Franklin H Bascom owned it until his death in 1890. Harry Emery was running it in 1906. The Bascom name stayed on the Hotel for many years until it was renamed the Hotel Emery (see photo)

The hotel was built in 1816 by Simon Babbit and was known by several names over the years including Babbit's Tavern, Hotel Bascom, Hotel Emery and the Bethel Inn. It burned January 31, 1980.

I'd guess the photo was taken between 1915 and 1925. I'll bet a few of you can narrow it down by the cars in the first photo.

Just a few more Hotel Bascum photos

Here are some photos of the stable the was there prior to the Gulf Station.

Here is a photo showing few autos in town. You can see the horses standing about where the Gulf Station would later be built on the right.

Here is one showing all the hitching posts on Main Street. The Bascom Hotel is on the right

Awesome info there, T-Fan! As to year of first pic, I'd guessed '20-'23, due to all the soft-top cars. But, hey, if was around since 1816, this building covered a lot of chronological territory!

Thanks, Joe. I was just going from the valve covers, and I was only lucky enough to have one Stude, a '62, so I had to ask. Thanks again for filling in the picture, bro!

  10. There's one of these near me that is all original, near mint and still owned by the widow of the original owner. It's amazing what you see at garage sales. And no, it wasn't for sale. I asked several times. ;)

Thanks twin6 and TuckerFan. I was squinting real hard to make out the sign, looked like Babson to me. I bet it was a real neat place.
