Grapeshot, : cannon charge consisting of small round balls, usually of lead or iron, and used primarily as an antipersonnel weapon. Typically, the small iron balls were held in clusters of three by iron rings and combined in three tiers by cast-iron plates and a central connecting rod. This assembly, which reminded gunners of a cluster of grapes (hence the name), broke up when the gun was fired, spread out in flight like a shotgun charge, and sprayed the target area. Grapeshot was widely used in wars of the 18th and 19th centuries at short range against massed troops.(definition stolen from Britannica Online Dictionary)

for post 52415 cannon crew pic. This type of round is called "Canister Shot"Think of these rounds as big shot gun shells,When they are fired the wooden discs between the balls break up letting the balls scatter the same way a shotgun shell spreads out the pellets. This looks to be a coastal gun so these rounds are designed to do the most damage on a ships decks and masts.field pieces had rounds like this with hundreds of 50 caliber balls to rake advancing infantry lines this smaller caliber version was also called grape shot . Why do you think this is a re enactment photo and not just a Civil war photo of the gun crew?

These two pictures brought back memories for my parents, they both remember both of these areas well. They both remember the Christmas display that Crew-Beggs used to have on their building. The parking lot in the first attached picture is where Crews-Beggs used to be located.

The first picture is hard to get a similar shot from google because of the tree growth. The picture was taken from the sidewalk and the google car was in the left lane on the road.
